Entry/ Mid-Level Grid Interconnection Consultant (Summer 2027)

Target start date: Summer 2027.

About the role

This position in Sargent & Lundy’s Consulting Group will focus on utility planning and advisory projects, including:

• Preparing new generator interconnection applications, including development of conceptual single-line diagrams, verification of compliance with reactive power requirements, and development of PSS/E models to support the applications.
• Reviewing ISO feasibility and system impact studies to provide guidance to clients who are ISO interconnection customers.
• Performing independent power system studies, primarily thermal and voltage contingency analyses, to support clients’ generator interconnection planning strategies.
• Performing advanced grid system studies to evaluate specific scenarios and impacts, such as higher renewable penetration, retirement of existing units, and evaluation of transmission and non-transmission alternatives.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering with a strong academic background and coursework emphasis in Power Systems Analysis.
• 0–2 years of relevant experience in transmission planning.
• U.S. work authorization required; sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Skills

• Previous power systems engineering experience, including one or more of the following:
  • Knowledge of power regions and ISOs/RTOs (PJM, MISO, NYISO, ERCOT, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE).
  • Experience modeling inverter-based resources and renewable generation (Wind Turbine Generators, photovoltaic, Battery Energy Storage Systems, hybrid generation) and associated collector systems for interconnection applications in PSS/E, PSLF, and/or PSCAD.
  • Experience using transmission planning software (PSS/E, TARA) for load flow modeling and contingency studies.
  • Experience in dynamic transient, stability, and other advanced studies in EMTP-RV or PSCAD.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience writing technical reports and proposals.
• Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work with and guide others.
• Project planning and leadership skills.

In this role, you are expected to solve problems using modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs. Many engineers build or use automation to create calculations, summarize technical documents, or draft design documentation, including appropriate use of agentic AI tools with strong engineering judgment and verification of results. While not required, programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued. Additional learning in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that helps apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems is also valued.

Pay

Compensation range: $62,998 – $90,586. Eligible positions include a base salary and a comprehensive benefits package. Individuals may also participate in the yearly discretionary bonus program.
