Entry - Mid Level Fire Designer/Engineer

About the Role

We provide total building system design and construction services across multiple high-growth markets for industry leaders in mission-critical, higher education, sports, healthcare, grocery, restaurant, and retail sectors. As a Fire Designer/Engineer at Henderson, you’ll work on projects for some of the biggest names in business, community, health, retail, and venue spaces.

Responsibilities

Fire Designer I

• Performs calculations and designs basic engineering systems in collaboration with experienced design staff.
• Prepares system layouts, detailed drawings, and schematics.
• Reviews shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
• Prepares or modifies reports, plans, and designs for projects.
• Acts as a mentor to less experienced designers.
• Supports business development or pursuit activities.
• Participates in client, company, and/or industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
• Fosters a client-centric mindset and approach.
• Communicates with clients as needed for the development and coordination of requirements and scope of work.
• Supports answering questions from clients and architects.
• Occasionally visits job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
• Identifies and seeks to fill gaps in industry and/or discipline knowledge on a continuous basis.
• Maintains knowledge and understanding of common industry software, including Revit, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Office products.
• Researches and reviews new products, industry trends, and evolving codes and standards.

Fire Designer/Engineer II

• Performs calculations and designs basic to intermediate design systems with minimal supervision.
• Prepares system layouts, detailed drawings, and schematics.
• Reviews shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
• Prepares or modifies reports, plans, and designs for projects.
• Performs research and makes recommendations as to the feasibility of systems or equipment.
• Evaluates products for their application.
• Provides technical guidance to others when appropriate.
• Collaborates on business development or pursuit activities.
• Participates in client, company, and/or industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
• Fosters a client-centric mindset and approach.
• Communicates with clients as needed for the development and coordination of requirements and scope of work.
• Maintains proactive communication throughout the project cycle.
• Answers questions from clients and architects.
• Visits job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
• Assists in resolving conflicts involving owners, architects, and contractors as needed.
• Identifies and seeks to fill gaps in industry and/or discipline knowledge on a continuous basis.
• Maintains knowledge and understanding of industry software, including Revit, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Office products.
• Acts as a resource for training or assisting others as needed.
• Researches and reviews new products, industry trends, and evolving codes and standards.
• Understands and applies Henderson’s design guidelines, standards, policies, and procedures.
• Performs a limited range of project management responsibilities under the supervision of experienced managers.
• May support or be responsible for project coordination activities such as managing emails, coordinating scope and schedule, attending client meetings, ensuring project quality, responding to client questions, and coordinating project delivery.

Requirements

Fire Designer I

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of engineering (e.g., mechanical, electrical, fire protection, or architectural) and 1 year of relevant experience, or 4 years of experience with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred.
• Additional certifications and accreditations aligned with the relevant technical field (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD) preferred.
• Basic proficiency in engineering design, including knowledge of the A&E industry, codes, design guides, and standards.
• Proficiency with Revit and Bluebeam Revu preferred.
• High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand, and utilize various systems and processes.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels.
• Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Team-oriented with a willingness and ability to function in a highly collaborative environment and mentor less experienced designers.
• Ability to receive constructive feedback and adjust to coaching.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and engineering design software applicable to your discipline.

Fire Designer/Engineer II

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of engineering (e.g., mechanical, electrical, fire protection, or architectural) and 3 years of relevant experience, or 6 years of experience with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred.
• Additional certifications and accreditations aligned with the relevant technical field (e.g., BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD) preferred.
• Certifications and accreditations aligned with sustainability backgrounds (e.g., CDP, LEED, WELL) preferred.
• Intermediate knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, A&E industry, codes, design guides, and standards.
• Intermediate proficiency in Revit and Bluebeam Revu required.
• High technical aptitude: ability to learn, understand, and utilize various systems and processes.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and concisely with designers at all levels.
• Effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Team-oriented with a willingness and ability to function in a highly collaborative environment and mentor less experienced designers, while also working independently as needed.
• Adapts to changing work environments, priorities, and organizational needs.
• Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and adjust to coaching.

Pay
