About the role

This is an entry-level driver training role. The driver is responsible for learning to and/or gaining experience in driving a tractor trailer or straight truck intrastate and/or interstate on local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and/or overnight routes to deliver and unload various food and food-related products to customers. All routes must be completed safely in accordance with Company policies and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

The Driver Trainee communicates and interacts with customers, vendors, and co-workers professionally, ensuring all services and duties are executed in accordance with preferred work methods and customer service practices. Functions as a team member within the department and organization, performing any duty assigned to best serve the company.

Responsibilities

  • Attends and successfully completes PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program as required. Completes and maintains all training documentation per requirements.
  • Rides with and assists driver trainer in executing deliveries as required, following all instructions and directions provided.
  • Performs all required safety checks (e.g., pre/post-trip inspections) of tractor/truck and trailer according to DOT regulations and company safety standards. Reports all safety issues and/or required repairs.
  • Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies. Immediately reports any safety hazards.
  • Inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight. Performs count checks of items and verifies customer invoices.
  • Completes all required paperwork accurately and legibly.
  • Moves tractor to the loading dock and attaches preloaded trailer as needed.
  • Drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedules.
  • Unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas. Performs damage control checks and follows company policy for removing orders.
  • Verifies delivery of items with the customer and obtains proper signatures. Collects money (cash or checks) where required.
  • Loads customer returns onto the trailer and secures trailer doors. Ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked/secured at all times.
  • Unloads damaged goods and customer returns, bringing them to driver check-in and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Completes daily records of hours of service and logs in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and keeps trailers clean as required.
  • At the end of the shift, secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 0 - 6 months external driver school direct hire with a Class A CDL or 6+ months commercial driving experience.
  • High school diploma/GED or state-approved equivalent.
  • Valid Class A CDL.
  • Meets all state licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable).
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years.
  • Pass post-offer drug test and criminal background check.
  • Pass road test.
  • Valid current DOT Health Card or ability to secure a new one.
  • Able to hand-lift and utilize equipment (e.g., two-wheeler, lift gate) to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying sizes and weights (10-90 pounds) throughout the shift.
