Entry Level Survey Technician

About the role

Support the crew chief in collecting accurate field data for topographic design surveys, construction staking, and utility surveys. This position involves outdoor work and a commitment to safety and hard work.

Responsibilities

• Act as the on-site representative for WSP.
• Attend a Job Hazard Analysis Meeting every morning with the field crew.
• Locate and probe existing company gas lines.
• Conduct topographical survey gathering data on all major terrain features.
• Take field notes of data gathered.
• Interface with landowners and refer any questions, concerns, or issues to the appropriate Sr. Surveyors and/or client representative.
• Perform brush clearing.
• Complete training on assigned tasks as needed.
• Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, scientists, project control, and technicians on assigned survey tasks.
• Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including location data, statistical documentation, studies, surveys, and construction.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• High School Diploma.
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Previous survey experience is a plus but not required.
• Good interpersonal, documentation, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
• Willingness to learn and retain basic principles of pipeline design surveys, construction staking, and as-built surveys.
• Ability to record information in a legible and accurate manner (Field Notes).
• Professional oral and written communication skills.
• Sound self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge and reach conclusions from calculations, data collation, and survey results.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Travel is required, up to 90%, depending on project-specific requirements.
• Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
• This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy, including random tests.
