Entry Level Packaging Systems Design Engineer I (Start Summer 2027)
About the Role
Packaging Engineers work closely with our process, controls, and building system engineers to scope, layout, install, and commission packaging equipment lines for our food and beverage industry clients. As part of a design-build engineering firm and general contractor, packaging engineers define project requirements, estimate costs, create packaging flow diagrams, and provide onsite construction, start-up, and commissioning support for packaging equipment.
Responsibilities
- Develop design concepts, estimates, and functional specifications for packaging lines
- Interpret mechanical design requirements and customer specifications to ensure all requirements are realized in the packaging system design
- Specify, purchase, install, and commission packaging equipment
- Provide on-site construction project coordination and management
- Perform machine and process design
- Prepare machine testing requirements and procedures
- Prepare equipment specifications, purchase documentation, equipment/facility layouts, and design basis documents
- Survey existing conditions and create packaging flow diagrams, material balances, and packaging matrices
- Create equipment lists and assist with equipment bid packages
- Understand size and placement of control/electrical panels
- Produce basis of design documentation
- Advise on manufacturing and packaging design principles, including conveyance, wrapping, bagging, cartoning, filling, bottling, case packing, and palletizing
- Assist in process simulation and sanitary/warehouse design and layout
- Provide construction site support and observe rough-in construction compliance
- Develop AutoCAD equipment layouts
- Research packaging engineering best practices
- Support talent growth within the organization
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, packaging, industrial, or manufacturing engineering
- 0-3 years of work experience or schooling in scope, layout, install, and commissioning of packaging equipment lines
- Experience working for professional services, packaging, and food and beverage firms is a plus
- Proficiency with MS Office, MS Project, and familiarity with AutoCAD
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Intellectual curiosity and a positive, can-do, team-oriented attitude
- Strong problem-solving, organizing, and time management skills
- Must meet travel requirement: 50%+ of the year for on-site construction project coordination and management

- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
