Job Title: Design Tech Job Description The Design Tech will develop detailed design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems ranging from 4kV to 138kV. This role focuses on programmatic work such as overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, joint use, and inspection reports, while providing engineering support throughout the project lifecycle. The position offers structured training and growth opportunities in a stable, high-demand power delivery industry. Responsibilities Develop comprehensive design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems operating from 4kV through 138kV, with a focus on overloaded transformers, inspection and maintenance, joint use, and inspection reports.Ensure all designs comply with safety requirements as well as established design and quality expectations.Travel to field sites as needed to perform inspections, gather data, and return to the office to complete engineering design work.Perform engineering calculations, including structural analysis for wood pole loading, guying calculations, specifying conductor sags and tensions for recommended spans, and voltage drop and flicker calculations.Prepare and develop permitting documents for various Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).Provide engineering support during construction, including reviewing work and conducting post-construction evaluations to confirm compliance with applicable engineering and construction standards.Conduct root cause analysis of outages and develop mitigation plans using sound engineering principles and design practices.Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to communicate design intent, resolve technical issues, and support project delivery.Represent the business professionally in client-facing situations, demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skills.Contribute to a fast-paced project environment by managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and supporting continuous improvement of design processes. Essential Skills Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology (mechanical, electrical, civil, or related discipline).Ability and desire to lead a team of engineers and contribute to complex design projects.Strong capability to interact with clients and represent the organization and self professionally.Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent projects.Fundamental understanding of power distribution and electrical distribution concepts.Ability to perform engineering calculations related to structural analysis, wood pole loading, guying, conductor sags and tensions, and voltage drop and flicker.Proficiency or willingness to learn design tools and GIS-related technologies used in utility and power distribution engineering.Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting safety, design, and quality standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is a plus.Any prior experience in power distribution or utility engineering is beneficial.Experience or coursework related to distribution design, power distribution, and electrical distribution engineering.Comfort working with GIS and related systems in a utility or engineering context.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in diagnosing outages and developing engineering-based solutions.Effective communication skills for working with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.Motivation to build a long-term career in the power delivery industry, with interest in ongoing training and professional development. Work Environment This role is based in an office environment with a cubicle setting in Carmel, Indiana. The office is being established specifically to support major power project work in the region, and the team supports projects across the state, primarily within a defined service territory. Candidates will be expected to work in the Carmel office four days per week during the first 9–12 months. After being hired directly and gaining experience, onsite expectations typically shift to three days per week, with the potential for additional flexibility after a few years. Field visits to project sites are part of the role, and candidates should be willing and able to travel to sites as needed; mileage is reimbursed. The culture combines the resources of a larger engineering firm with a small-office feel, building a team from the ground up and supporting collaborative, growth-oriented work. The dress code is casual for day-to-day office work, with the expectation to dress appropriately for client-facing meetings or field visits. The position follows a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Carmel, IN. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.04 - $24.04/hr.
