Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Minimum Qualifications: Attainment of the minimum age of 21 years. No maximum age requirement. Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Washington State Driver License. Be a high school graduate or possess GED certification. Be a United States Citizen or a lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language.
    • * Good physical and mental health.
    • Meet minimum weight and height standards.
    • Vision, uncorrected 20/100, corrected to 20/20 on both eyes.
    • RCW 41.14.100 An applicant for a position of any kind under civil service under the provisions of this chapter, must be a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language.
    • An application for a position with a law enforcement agency maybe rejected if the law enforcement agency deems that it does not have the resources to conduct the background investigation required pursuant to chapter 43.101 RCW. Resources means materials, funding, and staff time.
    • Nothing in this section impairs an applicant's rights under state antidiscrimination laws.
    • * Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Civil Service Eligibility Register

The names of qualified candidates resulting from continuous examinations shall be entered on the eligible register. Certifications for appointments shall be from this register.

Civil Service Selection Process

Vacancies are filled by the Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five eligibles forwarded to the appointing authority (Sheriff) for interview and background investigation, as vacancies occur.

Automatic Disqualifiers

  • Have you passed the pre-employment testing given by Public Safety Testing, completed your Personal History Statement and sent your scores to Island County?
  • When did you take & pass the Public Safety Test?
  • Are you claiming Veterans' Scoring Criteria Status?
  • What is your PST Score?
  • Are you willing and able to submit to a complete background investigation including polygraph examination, psychological examination and medical examination?
  • Do you have a current Peace Officer Certification in the State of Washington or a state with reciprocity recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center (graduation from an approved law enforcement training academy and ability to meet standards prescribed by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission for equivalency as set forth in WAC 139-05-21); have satisfactorily served the full probationary period in a permanent position; and have served eighteen (18) consecutive months as a fulltime, paid, commissioned officer for a City, County, State, Tribal, or Federal Agency?
  • If your answer is no, you do not meet the current qualifications and your application will NOT be considered for a Civil Service Examination.

  • For a position with the Island County Sheriff's Office you are required to furnish information for use in determining your suitability.
  • This agency will not release information provided to them to any person including yourself.
  • The information submitted to this agency is confidential and will be used only for investigating suitability for law enforcement employment.

Authorization to Release Information

I hereby authorize release of any and all information that you may have concerning me, including information of a confidential or privileged nature. I hereby authorize all my previous employers, physicians and professionals who may have examined or treated me, friends, acquaintances, credit reporting services, public agencies and all others to furnish the Island County Sheriff's Office any and all information they may have concerning me. I hereby release you, your organization, or others from liability damage which may result from furnishing the information requested. I further authorize that a photocopy of this form shall be for all intents and purposes, as valid as the original. I authorize you to retain a copy for your files. This release is valid for any information supplied within one (1) year of the date of application.

Veterans' Scoring Criteria Status

  • Are you claiming Veterans' Scoring Criteria Status?
  • Do you certify that you have been released from active military service or you are in receipt of separation orders?
  • You have discharge documentation from the United States department of defense that characterizes your service as honorable.
  • Are you claiming Veterans' Criteria Status?
  • If so, do you certify that to the best of your knowledge you are entitled to the veterans' scoring criteria status as set forth in RCW 41.04.010, and that by falsely claiming veterans' scoring criteria status you will be disqualified from employment with Island County Sheriff's Office.
  • You also understand that, if employed, any misrepresentation of facts regarding your receiving veterans' scoring criteria status is sufficient cause for dismissal.
  • If your answer is YES, please attach/upload a copy of your United States Department of Defense discharge document DD Form 214 Member -4 copy, National Guard Bureau Report of Separation & Service NGB Form 22, or other equivalent or successor discharge paperwork (DD Form 214WS Worksheet, USDVA Verification Letter, Statement of Military Service) that characterizes your service as honorable.
  • If you are claiming Veterans' Criteria Status, are you claiming:
    • Ten percent (10%) to a veteran who served during a period of war or in an armed conflict as defined in RCW 41.04.005 and does not receive military retirement.
    • The percentage shall be added to the passing mark, grade, or rating of competitive examinations until the veteran's first appointment.
    • The percentage shall not be utilized in promotional examinations.
    • Five percent (5%) to a veteran who did not serve during a period of war or in an armed conflict as defined in RCW 41.04.005 or is receiving military retirement.
    • The percentage shall be added to the passing mark, grade, or rating of competitive examinations until the veteran's first appointment.
    • The percentage shall not be utilized in promotional examinations.
