Entry Level Assistant Transmission Line Mechanical Engineer

WSP is seeking an Entry Level Assistant Transmission Line Mechanical Engineer for our Maitland, Florida office. Join our Transmission Line Team and contribute to a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves complex challenges.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of transmission line design for new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions. This role focuses on ensuring the long-term health of high-voltage transmission lines by accounting for structure load development, hardware selection, and operating clearances under various weather conditions. You will work with PLS CADD Modeling software and aerial imagery to create detailed line routes while collaborating directly with utilities and construction partners. Responsibilities include developing models, procuring construction materials, and producing professional drawings to facilitate construction.

Responsibilities

• Execute the engineering of transmission projects up to 765kV.
• Support initial project execution layout to ensure an efficient and effective project plan.
• Maintain project budget and schedule.
• Facilitate and adhere to WSP’s QA/QC procedures.
• Develop expertise in transmission line design, including PLS-CADD, structure staking, foundations, assembly drawings, structure loading, material procurement, construction specifications, methods, estimates, and support.
• Travel to the field as needed.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
• Complete assigned training tasks.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
• Strong research skills with an analytical mindset.
• Excellent command of the English language, with strong written and oral communication skills.
• Familiarity with design/build processes and concepts.
• Knowledge of relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, and related tools.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
• Ability to work flexible schedules based on project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Experience using the Microsoft Office software suite.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification.
• Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
• Prior internship experience related to the degree of study and specific engineering discipline.
• Active membership or participation in local professional practice organizations.
• Relevant coursework in structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, soil mechanics, foundation design, and surveying.
• Previous engineering design or drafting work experience, particularly in civil and/or structural engineering.
• Completion of the F.E. Exam, or possession of Engineer Intern (EI) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
