The Girls’ Middle School (GMS), founded in 1998, is committed to progressive education and innovative programming, serving a diverse and inclusive community of middle school students. Our project-based curriculum fosters creative problem-solving, collaborative teamwork, and independent thought. GMS educates girls* during a pivotal time in their lives, helping them develop self-knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills with a staff attuned to their emotional and social needs. GMS encourages girls to find their voices, take risks, and become self-reliant.

*At GMS, “girls” refers to cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth, and any girl-identified youth.

The Girls’ Middle School educates girls at a crucial time in life. We create an inclusive environment where academic growth is nourished. A GMS girl discovers her strengths and expresses her voice while respecting the contributions of others.

About the Role

The Girls’ Middle School is seeking a passionate middle school educator to teach our 7th Grade Entrepreneurial Class, collaborate closely with the 7th-grade team, and participate in activities that support GMS’s innovative and engaging programming. This is a 50% part-time faculty position. Classes meet 1-2 times a week, with the remainder of the time dedicated to planning and collaboration.

The Entrepreneurial Program

The GMS Entrepreneurial Program offers profound and long-lasting lessons, building on the insight that project-based work extends beyond content mastery. Students develop critical skills in critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.

This year-long, interdisciplinary course challenges students to design a novel physical product, manufacture it, and market it to investors and customers. Each team launches a small company with seed funding from the school. The program culminates in a celebratory night where students present their companies to Silicon Valley investors and sell their products to the community.

Throughout the program, students grow in leadership, teamwork, creativity, product design, project and time management, mathematics, economics, communications, marketing, and public speaking. They gain confidence in their capabilities as creators, leaders, and self-advocates, learning they can be producers as well as consumers.

Teaching at GMS

At GMS, our faculty are passionate about working with middle school girls and believe in the value of the middle school experience. Teachers are attentive to and supportive of every student, serving as both middle school specialists and subject matter experts. They inspire students across diverse interests—from physics to programming, sculpture to skateboarding, musical theatre to metal shop.

Teaching at GMS means being part of a joyful, inclusive, and respectful community of students and adults. Faculty enjoy autonomy in creating learning experiences while thriving in a collaborative environment. Opportunities include designing interdisciplinary projects, leading engaging field trips, and participating in travel experiences.

Responsibilities

• Teach the 7th Grade Entrepreneurial Class, guiding students through product design, manufacturing, and marketing.
• Collaborate closely with the 7th-grade team to support innovative and engaging programming.
• Participate in school activities that foster a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.
• Incorporate social and emotional learning (SEL) best practices to support teamwork and collaboration.
• Communicate effectively with families and manage parent volunteers in and out of the classroom.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study.
• Teaching experience with middle school students is preferred.
• Familiarity with entrepreneurship and the product design cycle.
• Knowledge of social and emotional learning (SEL) best practices.
• Confidence and skills in communicating with families.
• Prior work experience at a startup or as a maker is a plus.
