About the role
We are seeking a talented and experienced Software Engineer to join our team. As a Software Engineer, you will design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems, working closely with other engineers to create solutions that meet client needs. This role offers the opportunity to work with modern tools and technologies in a dynamic, collaborative environment committed to delivering high-quality software.
This position allows for partial telework and requires flexibility to adapt to schedule changes, including working 1–2 days per week at our Columbia, MD office.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems
- Work closely with other engineers to create software solutions that meet client needs
- Maintain strong working knowledge and experience developing Java-based software
- Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in software development
- Seamlessly transition between hands-on execution and team guidance, treating mentorship and leadership as inherent components of senior-level impact
- Build and maintain Kubernetes deployments using tools like Helm and Flux
- Design enterprise APIs and RESTful web services
- Work within a microservices architecture and agile software lifecycle
- Serve as a tech lead, mentor, or manager for engineering teams
- Troubleshoot issues and work under pressure with multiple deadlines
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Nine (9) years of experience in Software Engineering, with expertise in modern Java frameworks and libraries (e.g., Spring, Guava)
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field; or seven (7) years of relevant experience with a Master’s in a related field; or a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and thirteen (13) years of relevant experience
- U.S. Citizenship required; current U.S. Government Security Clearance (Secret or TS level) is desired but not required
Skills
Required
- Strong Java software development experience
- Experience designing enterprise APIs and RESTful web services
- Experience with microservices architecture and the agile software lifecycle
- Proven ability to learn quickly and work well both independently and in a team
- Experience with the Linux operating system
- Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Git, Nexus, Maven)
- Experience building and maintaining Kubernetes deployments using tools like Helm and Flux
- Demonstrated experience serving as a tech lead, mentor, or manager for engineering teams
- Ability to work in a hybrid environment (1–2 days per week in Columbia, MD office)
Desired
- Experience with cloud-based technologies (AWS, Azure)
- Experience designing and writing custom Kubernetes tooling, such as operators and custom CRDs
- Experience with programming languages such as Go and Python
- Experience writing automation in CI/CD tooling (e.g., GitLab CI pipelines)
- Experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, and full-text search engines (e.g., Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Solr)
- Scripting experience
- Prior experience or familiarity with our Big Data Platform
- Understanding of AGILE software development methodologies and standard tool suites (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, GitHub Enterprise)

Pay
The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 – $275,000, depending on education and years of experience.
