Immediate start for a full-time English teacher; part-time candidates for the 2026–27 year will also be considered.

About the role

Teach three or four sections of 11th-grade English in a residential, co-educational boarding school. Faculty are active participants in Taft’s academic, co-curricular, and residential programs.

Responsibilities

  • Teach the equivalent of three or four 70-minute class blocks each semester, meeting four times per week (Monday–Saturday) on a rotating schedule.
  • Grade student work within one week of submission and hold extra-help sessions as needed.
  • Write individualized student-performance comments three times per academic year.
  • Attend weekly faculty and department meetings, student round-table meetings, and other required administrative meetings.
  • Serve on at least one standing committee that meets periodically throughout the year.
  • Participate in two seasons (or equivalent) of Taft’s afternoon co-curricular program (approximately 24 weeks per year, 5 days per week).
  • Fulfill evening supervisory duties: one 4.5-hour weekday shift (7:00 p.m.–11:30 p.m.) per week, one 5-hour weekend shift (7:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m.) per month, and periodic overnight duty for faculty in dormitory housing.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of students, attend weekly advisory lunches, and write end-of-semester advisor letters.
  • Attend seated community dinners during fall and spring terms.
  • Complete summer preparation work for the upcoming academic year.
  • Drive students to co-curricular activities, appointments, and medical emergencies (requires obtaining a Connecticut A Endorsement on your driver’s license).
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students in a residential setting.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the head of school.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant professional experience; five years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the school’s Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Portrait of a Learner.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and internet browsers; training will be provided on Canvas LMS and Veracross.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse students, employees, and stakeholders in a globally inclusive residential community.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
