English Teacher
About the role
The English Teacher position at the US Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL, is part of the Future Sailor Preparatory Course (FSPC). This specialized program aims to enhance recruits' academic skills, particularly in English, which are crucial for the ASVAB, a standardized test used for enlistment and job placement.
Responsibilities
- Teach the FSPC curriculum, including vocabulary, Greek and Latin roots, reading comprehension, and test-taking skills.
- Maintain an orderly and professional classroom environment.
- Manage discipline within the constraints of military personnel.
- Navigate and utilize Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Teams for lesson delivery.
- Facilitate 2-3 hour instructional sessions and 30-minute study hall/tutor times.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English Language Arts or a related field.
- Classroom experience teaching middle school or higher levels.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt and motivate students.
- Resilience and organizational skills.
- Completion of Navy-specific training modules.
- Able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- Fluent in English for reading, writing, and speaking.

- Frequent use of hands and arms.
- Prolonged sitting may be required.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, and focus adjustment.
- Ability to interpret instructions involving multiple abstract and concrete variables.
