About the role

A staff member who, under the supervision of assigned teacher, is responsible for assisting with the instructional program as well as performing general clerical duties.

Responsibilities

  • Tutoring students as directed
  • Aiding teachers with routine duties
  • Ensuring the safety and discipline of students
  • Administering, scoring, and recording achievement and diagnostic tests
  • Monitoring students during recess, after school, and other times as needed
  • Assisting the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills
  • Maintaining classroom facilities and materials
  • Supervising clean up
  • Helping students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher
  • Distributing and collecting workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction
  • Guiding independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work as directed by the teacher
  • Assisting with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips
  • Aiding with large group activities
  • Maintaining bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays
  • Reading to students, listening to students read, and participating in other forms of communication with students
  • Aiding students in the media center
  • Recording student attendance and collecting and recording collection of money
  • Aiding with lunch, snacks, cleanup, and toilet routines
  • When appropriate, participating in staffings or recommendations for program changes for students
  • Serving as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers
  • Maintaining high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students
  • Participating in in-service training programs as assigned
  • Administering minor first aid
  • Assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the teacher

Qualifications

  • AA degree or equivalent of 2-year college, or pass proficiency exam
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Computer literate
  • Experience working with children
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, parents and staff
