Position Summary
The Journey Level Engines Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and testing marine diesel engines and related systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring customer satisfaction, equipment reliability, and safe, efficient operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Determine unit condition by conducting inspections and advanced diagnostic testing
- Identify deficiencies and complete engine overhauls and related repairs
- Perform sea trials to verify performance and make necessary adjustments
- Perform Volvo Penta acceptance testing per manufacturer standards
- Troubleshoot and repair diesel engine electronic controls
- Utilize electrical multi-meters and diagnostic software
- Maintain accurate engine and vessel service documentation
- Complete detailed work logs in a timely manner
- Communicate professionally with customers, technical support, sales, and management
- Evaluate warranty, service, and parts options to help control costs
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment and service vehicle
- Provide guidance, assistance, and training to apprentice marine technicians
- Accept ownership of new requests and proactively identify value-add opportunities
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years of diesel engine experience
- Experience with small bore marine diesel engines
- Knowledge of marine electrical systems
- Thorough understanding of diesel engine electronic controls
- Proficiency using electrical multi-meters
- Strong ability to visually diagnose mechanical and electrical issues
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, operating instructions, and work orders
- Strong laptop/PC skills for diagnostics and documentation
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience with Volvo marine engines, drives, and associated control systems
- Possess a boating safety card
- Experience with detailed service report writing
- Technical schooling or formal diesel training
- Experience with large bore marine diesel engines
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
