Responsibilities
- Fill, lift, and transport bags of soil weighing approximately 90 pounds for analysis.
- Lift and handle asphalt cores and core barrels (approx. 40 pounds) for laboratory testing.
- Conduct field samplings of soils for California Bearing Ratio tests.
- Prepare samples for testing, including identifying, dating, separating, and logging information.
- Test soil, sand, rock, paving liquid, emulsified asphalt, and concrete samples for various properties.
- Perform simpler phases of specialized materials tests.
- Assist in field crews operating test boring equipment.
- Record test data, make computations, and prepare report forms and graphs.
- Operate testing machines and equipment.
- Perform clean-up and minor maintenance of the laboratory and equipment.
- Conduct other field sampling and testing work as required.
Requirements
OPTION I: High school diploma, its equivalent, or higher.
OPTION II: Six (6) months of construction, maintenance, or manual labor experience, along with a recognized high school equivalency credential (e.g., GED) or an associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
Qualifications
- Physical Class 4 – Arduous: Frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces.
- Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to utilize alternative transportation for job-related functions.
Special Requirement Information
- Submit a legible copy of high school diploma, transcripts, or equivalency certificate (GED, HiSET, TASC, CHSPE) within five (5) calendar days of filing the application.
- For associate’s degree or higher, submit official transcripts showing the degree conferral date. International degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- Ensure all documents are in English or include a translation. Unofficial documents will not be accepted.
Assessment Process
- Multiple-Choice and/or Simulation Assessment (weighted 100%) measuring: Achievement, Professional Potential, Responsibility, Teamwork, Reading Comprehension, and Numerical Calculation.
- Passing score: 70% or higher to be added to the eligible register.
