About the role
The City of Virginia Beach is recruiting for an Engineering Technician I or Engineering Technician II. Selection is based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. This position is in the Technical Services and Asset Management group within the Public Works Operations Division.
Pay
Engineering Technician I: G22, $49,504.00 – $77,147.20
Engineering Technician II: G24, $54,579.20 – $85,051.20
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for both classifications include:
- Support GIS mapping of Public Works infrastructure data and inventory in a Geographic Information System (GIS).
- Research existing utility and site plans and compile project information to accurately document existing conditions.
- Assist in processing the integration of GIS with data from work management software (Cartegraph), AVL applications, and other databases as needed.
Engineering Technician I
The Engineering Tech I performs a variety of GIS-related tasks under the direct oversight of an Engineering Technician III or higher-level position. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and may include, but is not limited to:
- Accurate mapping of underground and aboveground Public Works assets from Technical Drawings, Construction Plans, or Survey Drawings.
- Accurately field locate and geospatially verify Public Works assets using GPS or other digital field mapping applications.
- Coordinate with inspectors and surveyors as needed to collect and verify infrastructure data.
- Collaborate with team members to complete time-sensitive mapping projects.
- Apply creative thinking and problem-solving skills when editing and maintaining large geospatial datasets.
- Develop and maintain Stormwater and Streets location maps.
- Develop and utilize Python, Arcade, and V-Basic scripts to filter, populate, and manage large geospatial datasets.
- Manage inventory and perform minor maintenance of large-format plotters and related equipment.
- Manage and maintain an editor version within a versioned geospatial SDE environment.
Engineering Technician II
The Engineering Tech II performs a variety of GIS-related tasks of a moderately complex nature that are regularly reviewed by an Engineering Technician III or higher-level position. Representative duties include, but are not limited to:
- All Engineering Tech I duties.
- Create presentation-quality maps and other GIS-based visual products.
- Develop models and Python scripts to automate routine GIS workflows.
- Coordinate and integrate tabular data in combination with geospatial datasets.
- Utilize ArcGIS tools for data interpolation.
- Database querying using language unique to the work management system, Cartegraph.
- Create and publish maps and GIS content through ArcGIS Online.
- Integrate AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) data into GIS using the ESRI GeoEvent Processor.
- Assist with team effort to continue providing accurate, concise data with quality control tools such as filters, scripts, searches, and critical thinking skills.
