About the role

We are seeking a full-time Engineering Technician at Garmin’s U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. The role involves assisting Design Engineers, diagnosing and correcting wiring and circuit issues, performing electrical circuit prototyping, and executing product test plans.

Responsibilities

  • Aid Design Engineers by reading and debugging basic circuits to the component level.
  • Diagnose and correct connection and wiring problems and create system wiring diagrams with assistance.
  • Operate basic and advanced lab test equipment to test and troubleshoot test failures, including using equipment like PCB milling machines, multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and logic analyzers.
  • Set up and execute product test plans and provide detailed test reports, documenting test results and analysis.
  • Perform basic PCB and unit modifications, adjust, calibrate, align, and modify circuitry and components, and record effects on unit performance.
  • Prepare and execute electrical rework and software updates on lab prototypes.
  • Check and/or test functionality of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions.
  • Work with various computer systems and programs to enter schematics, bills of materials, and complete component or equipment purchase orders.
  • Recommend design improvements and changes in basic circuitry or assembly methods to improve reliability or simplify assembly and maintenance.
  • Learn to handle more difficult hardware modifications and track lab equipment.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, or another substantially similar electronics or technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule).
  • Ability to read schematics, understand and debug basic circuits, and apply test processes and methods to verify design and product performance.
  • Understands product test plans and procedures including FCC, CE, and live GPS testing.
  • Ability to bend, twist and lift up to 75 pounds while using safe lifting techniques, and push/pull test equipment racks of up to 200 pounds, stand for an entire shift, climb and utilize ladders to connect cables, and walk long distances throughout the facility.

Qualifications

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5) preferred.
  • Mechanical prototyping skills preferred.
  • Test software development experience preferred.

Skills

  • Basic and advanced lab equipment operation (PCB milling machines, oscilloscopes, EMC analyzers, etc.).
  • Product test plan and procedure understanding (FCC, CE, live GPS testing).
  • Computer systems and programs proficiency (entering schematics, bills of materials, completing purchase orders).
  • Design improvement and modification recommendation skills.
  • Lab equipment tracking and calibration coordination.
