Engineering Specialist
About the role
The City of Sumner is seeking an Engineering Specialist to join our dynamic Public Works Department. This entry-level position involves assisting with planning, designing, organizing, coordinating, and maintaining projects and maintenance work for the Engineering division.
Responsibilities
- Conducts a variety of organizational studies as directed.
- Aids in the preparation and review of public works plans, specifications, and contracts for various construction projects.
- Administers projects from initiation through project completion.
- Collaborates with engineering consultants, contractors, state and federal agency representatives, developers, and the general public.
- Performs on-site inspections of public works construction projects.
- Attends public meetings to receive and provide information.
- Provides input for the development and administration of the department budgets.
- Serves as a liaison between the Engineering division and other City departments.
- Manages administrative reporting of CIP Grants.
- Writes and submits grant applications.
- Manages and monitors assigned performance measures.
Requirements
Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related engineering field is required. Civil engineering work experience in a municipal setting is preferred.
Special Requirements: Possession of, or ability to acquire, a valid Washington State driver's license with a record free from serious or frequent violations.

- Ability to ensure compliance with City ordinances with consistency and impartiality.
- Ability to analyze situations accurately and recommend an effective course of action.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service by using a friendly, professional, and accurate approach to a wide variety of customers, including contractors, architects, business owners, government officials, general public, and other staff.
Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Schedule
This is a full-time, Fair Labor Standards Act non-exempt position. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Alternative and hybrid work schedules may be available.
