Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc. (“HATCI”) is the North American headquarters of Hyundai Motor Company’s R&D, serving the North American market needs of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. HATCI’s activities include product planning, design, quality, testing/evaluation, and new technology development for vehicle systems.
About the role
This position will lead a team of Engineers and Technicians in the testing of new vehicle propulsion technology and the validation of new vehicle propulsion hardware at our Superior Township, MI facility (near Ann Arbor). The role involves collaborating with internal and external teams to support strategic goals established by Hyundai/Kia senior management and reports to the ePST Department’s Sr. Manager.
Responsibilities
- Understand ICE and EV/HEV applications from system to components, including lab components such as dyno controllers, dynos, high-power/high-voltage power supplies, thermal management systems/chambers, data acquisition systems, and dyno mechanical setup/alignment.
- Conduct vehicle propulsion dyno validation supporting manufacturing and quality of new vehicle propulsion technology and NAFTA content.
- Perform competitive assessments and benchmarking of new vehicle propulsion technologies, defining how competitive technologies work, and provide recommendations for concept application.
- Provide supplier support from a product engineering perspective to aid in manufacturing and quality issues of components and systems.
- Support manufacturing to ensure supplier readiness for production.
- Manage teams focused on vehicle propulsion mapping, calibration, and development for current production and R&D projects.
- Oversee team management, including training, evaluations, discipline, hiring, pay changes, promotions, or terminations.
- Handle administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecard approvals, vacation requests, and travel requests.
- Plan and monitor department budget and fixed assets, establishing requirements for future years.
- Lead, motivate, and mentor team members while collaborating with other staff and overseas R&D teams.
- Issue bi-weekly reports to management and project summary reports to top management.
- Track project timing and status against established deliverables.
- Collaborate with HATCI and Korean development teams to generate execution plans and manage project deliverables.
- Participate in meetings with test system component suppliers and review system/component functional requirements.
- Travel up to 10% (domestic and international).
Requirements
- A.S. or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years of automotive testing experience.
- 2+ years of project management experience.
- Knowledge of vehicle propulsion/powertrain principles, operation, and propulsion control systems.
- Proven history of engineering projects related to development, testing, or simulation of vehicle propulsion/powertrain systems.
- Familiarity with standardized vehicle test procedures such as EPA and SAE.
- Strong written, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of people management experience (as a supervisor or manager).
- 2+ years of experience managing a test lab.
