About the Role

We are seeking a talented Manager of Engineering for Transformer Repair and Remanufacturing to lead a team of four engineers at our transformer repair and remanufacturing plant in Denver, Colorado. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the engineering department to meet company objectives for design, product development, and on-time delivery. The ideal candidate brings extensive transformer engineering experience, initiative, and leadership ability to quickly adapt to internal and external customer needs, guiding the team toward delivering top-tier projects. The ideal candidate also possesses strong experience in both power and specialty transformers.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and support a team of four engineers
  • Develop training plans and support technical competency development across the team
  • Manage employee responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, training, task assignment, performance evaluation, recognition, disciplinary actions, grievance resolution, and problem-solving
  • Develop processes that meet business needs across the organization
  • Manage complex issues within the engineering function and area of expertise
  • Contribute to long-term planning and overall business strategy for IPS Transformer
  • Develop and execute a 3-year engineering roadmap focused on standardization, process improvement, talent development, and scalable growth
  • Jointly responsible for year-over-year revenue and profitability growth alongside the Commercial Director and Zone General Manager

Engineering Leadership and Project Support

  • Lead the engineering team to provide engineering support and project management for the Denver transformer repair/remanufacturing and field service business
  • Oversee key projects, processes, and performance reports to ensure consistent execution and accountability
  • Ensure the team delivers consistent and complete project results that meet company and customer expectations

Proposal, Design, and Technical Review

  • Review customer specifications and summarize material, engineering, and design costs for new proposals and change orders
  • Create, review, and approve technical clarifications, exceptions, and submittals for suppliers and customers
  • Review and approve technical content of proposals and contract modifications, while providing input on commercial aspects such as milestone billing and project strategy
  • Provide support for rewinding design, power upgrades, and transformer upgrades across various designs, types, and OEMs during quoting and execution phases
  • Perform design reviews as needed to identify and mitigate project risks
  • Review and approve engineering analyses, reverse engineering work, failure reports, repair instructions, and customer recommendations
  • Provide specialized assistance for complex transformer diagnostics, root cause failure analysis (RCFA), design review, testing, and troubleshooting

Process Improvement, Quality, and Business Alignment

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, standards, and programs for the IPS transformer services business
  • Drive material cost reduction, supplier excellence, CIPS continuous improvement objectives, and related support at facilities and service centers
  • Establish goals and direction for the program that support reliability, cost control, and an unmatched customer experience
  • Ensure products meet customer, third-party, and company specifications, expectations, and standards
  • Ensure product quality through development of electrical test methods in collaboration with Quality Control and Test Engineering, and through validation of finished products and system capabilities

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Customer Engagement

  • Act as senior technical advisor to key clients and provide support for complex customer issues, while protecting project margins and customer relationships
  • Collaborate with operations, quality, procurement, and sales departments to ensure company objectives are met, enhancing safety, quality, productivity, and repair execution
  • Collaborate with customers to support major proposals, RFP/RFQ responses, customer site visits, lunch-and-learn sessions, and technical presentations
  • Help translate technical findings into clear customer recommendations and ensure IPS solutions are properly aligned
  • Stay current in professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, networking, and industry participation
  • Perform other assigned tasks

Qualifications

Education and Professional Credentials:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, plus at least eight years of electrical engineering experience in transformer design and testing
  • Master's degree and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification valued

Technical Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with medium or large power transformers
  • Experience with specialty transformers (EAF, regulators, rectifiers, mobile, phase-shifting, or grounding) valued
  • Ability to create, read, or modify schematic and nameplate drawings, winding diagrams, control wiring diagrams, and transformer test plans
  • Extensive knowledge of transformer construction, including coils, core, tank, protection and controls, insulation, conductors, and fluids
  • Extensive experience in the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of transformers of various types, designs, age, and manufacturers
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and transformer design software

Leadership, Project Management, and Communication:

  • Experience leading an engineering team and managing projects exceeding one million dollars
  • Experience directing skilled labor in a shop or at customer sites valued
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with ability to communicate clearly and persuasively, listen attentively, answer questions, and participate productively in meetings
  • Strong business acumen, customer communication skills, and ability to influence operations, sales, and engineering areas
  • Ability to write clear reports and correspondence, present numerical data effectively, and communicate information in one-on-one and small group settings with customers and employees

Travel Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed to customer sites, supplier locations, and IPS facilities up to 20% of the time

Pay

  • $150,000 - $180,000 depending on experience
