About the role

Positions in this job family are responsible for overall management of a staff of engineers, technicians, and other personnel who provide engineering expertise, guidance, and technical assistance to state agencies, consultants, and the public. This role focuses on broader supervisory and management issues, including planning, organizing, and integrating the functions of the assigned unit.

We are seeking a Lead Engineer for ODOT's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Design and Engineering Branch. In this role, you will apply sound engineering judgment to develop statewide construction plans for Fiber Optic, CCTV, DMS, RWIS, and Vehicle Detection systems. Key responsibilities include submitting design plans and PES documents, reviewing consultant plans, and creating relocation plans for the State's fiber infrastructure. You will also support the development of statewide traveler information websites — including OKROADS.ORG and OKTRAFFIC.ORG — and manage Traffic Operations Center personnel during routine and emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Select, develop, and motivate subordinate staff to ensure resources are available to provide quality services and on-time performance.
  • Plan, organize, and manage the work of subordinate staff to ensure consistency with agency requirements.
  • Direct engineering activities for all or part of an agency’s responsibility (e.g., section, branch, division).
  • Develop and conduct a specific work program within an agency in accordance with policies, priorities, and budget constraints.
  • Manage and/or develop budgets for an assigned unit, including operating requirements, equipment, and material purchases.
  • Represent the department in contacts with the general public and public officials, answering questions and resolving complaints.
  • Oversee consulting engineer’s contracts and provide technical oversight.
  • Develop statewide construction plans for Fiber Optic, CCTV, DMS, RWIS, and Vehicle Detection systems.

Requirements

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (must obtain within six months of appointment if not already registered).
  • For Level I: Registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • For Level II: Registration as a Professional Engineer and one year of supervisory experience in a professional engineering-related field.

Skills

  • Knowledge of engineering practices, principles, and systems.
  • Knowledge of management principles and the principles of effective supervision.
  • Knowledge of budget planning, development, and control.
  • Ability to design and implement engineering activities.
  • Ability to organize projects and establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to supervise personnel and communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.

Pay

  • Level I: $115,500
  • Level II: $121,000

    • Sick leave: Accrued at 15 days per year.
  • Paid Holidays: 11 paid holidays per year.
  • Longevity Pay: Annual payments for eligible State employees with a minimum of 2 years of State service.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Professional services to help employees resolve personal problems.

Schedule

Full-time, regular position.
