About the Role

The Manager - Engineering is responsible for managing the plant engineering function, including all plant equipment and process systems, project engineering, utilities, and automation systems. This role involves planning, executing, monitoring, and closing projects while ensuring consistency with company processes. The incumbent will manage scope, costs, and schedules to deliver projects built to appropriate quality standards, supervise and lead the Engineering team, and oversee priorities, production, and work quality. The value of individual capital projects may exceed $1MM, with a total annual capital budget potentially exceeding $5MM.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and implementation of projects to meet timing, cost, and performance targets.
  • Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • Define project tasks and resource requirements; develop full-scale project plans.
  • Assemble and coordinate the project team; manage the project budget and schedule.
  • Track project deliverables and manage project quality.
  • Monitor and report on project progress to all stakeholders.
  • Define and control project risks, identifying potential problems and solutions.
  • Manage project changes and intervene to achieve project outputs.
  • Assess project outcomes and incorporate learning into future projects.
  • Approve engineering design, cost estimating, and installation of plant additions, renewals, changes, and improvements.
  • Inspect and analyze contractors' work for capital projects to ensure specification compliance and cost control.
  • Coordinate contractual and vendor arrangements with suppliers, vendors, repair shops, and capital/engineering contractors.
  • Resolve conflicts within the project team as they arise.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely and in accordance with company and governmental safety, environmental, and health standards.
  • Manage the capital project and estimate process; work with Supply Chain to identify cost-effective services and suppliers.
  • Participate in developing and maintaining effective employee relations within the Engineering Department; properly staff all positions.
  • Initiate training for new and experienced personnel; develop and maintain high morale within the department and across the plant.
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations; improve the department’s and plant’s safety posture and awareness.
  • Administer performance management for the engineering team, including periodic performance reviews.
  • Direct the efficient operation of plant energy (utility) systems, including electricity, water, natural gas, air, and steam.
  • Explore and direct energy system-related efficiency improvements, conservation, and appropriate cost distribution.
  • Supervise the plant’s Process and Automation Engineer to ensure state-of-the-art automation projects and repairs.
  • Set priorities for the automation function in conjunction with Production Management.
  • Keep abreast of the latest technological developments in Plant Engineering.
  • Participate in professional and technical societies to promote company interests.
  • Take initiative to achieve departmental/divisional EEO objectives and ensure fair personnel practices.
  • Provide technical support to other plants and satellites.
  • Act as a resource and champion for department continuous improvement activities (e.g., Suggestion Program, 5S, Kaizen, TPM, problem-solving).
  • Manage employee involvement in continuous improvement activities to ensure equal opportunities for participation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of ten years’ experience in engineering assignments as a Manager in a quality-focused environment with strong employee-oriented programs.
  • Strong technical skills and the ability to develop plant processes.
  • Well-developed business understanding, excellent written and oral communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, motivate others, and promote a positive work atmosphere.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of employees within the company.
  • Self-starter who seeks responsibility and can work with minimal direction.
  • Willingness to challenge conventional ideas; flexible, innovative, and able to function effectively in a team format.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is typically required to work in a controlled office environment, moving around the office as needed, and using office equipment such as a personal computer, fax, copier, and phone. Constant contact with individuals internal and external to the organization occurs via face-to-face discussions, electronic mail, phone calls, written letters, and/or faxes.

Frequent exposure to plant production areas may occur, including exposure to outside weather conditions, loud noise from equipment, and dust from production processes. Appropriate safety equipment is provided for use in these circumstances.

The employee must be able to read, write, listen, speak, and understand English; follow instructions; compose professional correspondence; complete paperwork accurately; work independently and with others; communicate effectively; analyze situations; be organized and detail-oriented; identify urgency; use judgment in decision-making; and demonstrate creativity and negotiation skills. The employee is expected to be self-directed, take initiative, maintain composure, multitask, manage time effectively, meet deadlines, display a cooperative attitude, and adhere to company and safety policies.

Safety Training

A new employee will receive New Employee Training from a qualified individual, which may include classroom training and a tour of plant area(s). Additional refresher safety training will be required as management deems appropriate or as dictated by MSHA regulations.

Pay

$140k - $175k annually based on experience, plus an annual incentive bonus.
