About the role

The Engineering Manager is responsible for all engineering and design activities on the engagement and assists the Project Manager. The role reports to the Project Manager and provides direction to Area Engineers and Discipline Leads and Discipline Engineers on engineering-related matters.

Responsibilities

• Scope definition
• Engineering planning and sequencing of engineering activities
• Engineering resource planning, onboarding, and demobilizations
• Technical leadership, integration of disciplines, and resolution of issues
• Engineering quality and Safety in Design
• Ensuring all engineering deliverables comply with engineering processes and procedures
• Management of engineering design tools
• Delivery of all technical deliverables to achieve project objectives within the specified timeframe and budget

Planning

• Ensure the following planning baseline information is in place and reflected in the Proposal, Engagement Work Plan, or Engineering Execution Plan:
  • Scope of engineering services and facilities
  • Roles Assignment (RACI) matrix for engineering scope of services
  • Engagement work package (EWP) register with budget, schedule, and scope aligned with engineering services and facilities
  • Deliverables list and association with EWPs
  • Engineering schedule and resource plan at EWP level, aligned with the overall project master schedule
  • Defined Global Delivery Work Plan (e.g., discipline distribution, team integration, vertical package handover)
  • Engineering training plan with budget
  • Client requirements (asset tagging, design specifications, approval process, handover, CAD, coordinate system)
  • Multi-disciplinary engineering workflows and methodologies
  • Vendor package register requiring engineering input (scope, technical adjudication, quality assessment, factory acceptance)
  • Integrated engineering systems plan (feeding into engagement Digital Delivery Plan)
  • Engagement procedures manual

Setup

• Ensure the following setup processes are in place and completed in the required timeframe:
  • Work Break Structure (WBS) with EWPs
  • Mobilization and onboarding of engineering resources
  • Design tools as identified in the engineering plan (including 3D clash detection), in coordination with the IM/PAT team
  • Baselining of the engineering schedule
  • Release of engineering EWPs and Timesheet Charge Codes for the first period of the engagement
  • Facilitation of design criteria and standards, ensuring consistent use of codes, regulatory requirements, and units of measure
  • Communication of engineering resource requirements and schedule to regional engineering leads
  • EWP breakdown including budgets, schedule, and deliverables
  • Distribution of engagement workplan, engineering execution plan, and procedures manual to discipline leads and engineering team
  • Statement that all deliverables must be formally checked and recorded

Execution

• Contribute to the development of the Project Execution Plan (PEP) with the project leadership team (procurement, project controls, construction, commissioning) and allocate roles and responsibilities
• Coordinate the engineering budget for the next phase when required
• Provide input into the engagement monthly report regarding design progress, actual cost against budget, earned progress, issues, and recommendations
• Coordinate with Procurement, Construction, Environmental, Safety, and Commissioning personnel early in the design effort to obtain input and conduct reviews
• Maintain contact with client management to ensure engineering deliverables meet client requirements
• Regularly review and appraise the structure of the engineering engagement team to meet short- and long-term objectives
• Ensure effective use of engineering systems and 3D intelligent design environment, complying with Hatch’s minimum digital standards
• Assume responsibility for the engineering administrative function, directing Area Engineers, Discipline Engineers, Project Engineer, Layout and BIM Coordinators, and other engaged groups
• Direct and review engineering activities to ensure satisfactory work quality and appropriate technical personnel development programs
• Involve specialist technical expertise from within Hatch or externally as necessary
• Raise safety awareness and apply design for safety principles
• If Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) are part of the scope:
  • Assign an appropriate P&ID coordinator
  • Ensure P&ID checklist is signed off by all relevant parties for the specific phase
  • Ensure alignment of fully intelligent P&ID systems with asset registers (equipment list, line list, valve list, instrument list)
  • Ensure HAZOP review is conducted and mitigation items are addressed
• Ensure required technical risk and safety assessments are conducted
• Arrange and facilitate design reviews and participate in engineering, management, and construction reviews
• Ensure clash detection is applied and clash exceptions are closed out
• Ensure technical design calculations are stored in the engagement’s Electronic Document Management System (EDMS)
• Coordinate quality audit verifications to ensure compliance with engineering standards, digital standards, and internal procedures
• Cooperate with the Global Engineering Practice of other regions on matters involving expertise and knowledge sharing
• Lead and promote the change management process
• Lead the engagement technical review process (governance, quality reviews, audits, gate review)
• Communicate changes to baseline information to identified stakeholders
• Contribute to/participate in Value Improvement Practices activities
• Develop Progressive Learnings for engineering scope as input into overall Progressive Learning

Requirements

• BSc/BEng degree in an engineering discipline
• Registration as a Professional Engineer with the governing authority, where applicable
• Typically, 12 years’ experience in a multi-disciplinary environment
• Typically, 3 years’ experience in managing design engineering teams
• Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, design, applications, processes, materials, and technologies
• General knowledge of industry, regulatory standards, codes, and design criteria in engineering disciplines
• Advanced ability to plan, coordinate, and organize
• Comprehensive knowledge of project planning, controls, and understanding of multi-discipline interdependencies
• Knowledge of 3D model/drawing production and document control methodologies
• Knowledge of earned value management, progress assessment, and engineering control strategies
• Ability to adapt to constant change and accommodate high-pressure situations
• Extensive knowledge of administrative practices and strong communication skills across all levels, including client representatives
• Ability to manage relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external clients)
• High degree of understanding of procurement, contracting, construction, and commissioning methodologies
• Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire others, transfer expertise, and provide coaching on best practices
• Ability to handle complex problem-solving tasks with appropriate analysis and high-level technical detail
