Engineering Lab Technician – Engineering Technology

Full-time regular position

About the role

Provide hands-on technical services and practical application guidance to students and faculty in an undergraduate engineering research setting. Support the instructional mission of the College and University by maintaining the mechanical aspects of the laboratories and specialized equipment in those laboratories.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair engineering lab equipment and maintain associated records.
• Prepare engineering lab equipment for engineering lab courses; purchase parts and/or components for machines and/or specimens.
• Assist students and faculty with fabrication of components, lab projects, student projects, test specimens, and research parts.
• Maintain inventory and contribute to best safety practices, ensuring students receive proper training and follow safe practices in accordance with appropriate standards.
• Complete periodic training courses and maintain knowledge and skill with changing technology for fabrication, maintenance, and assembly.
• Provide guidance regarding safe equipment operation and implementation of laboratory procedures.
• Provide support to the College with maintenance by fabricating and repairing university equipment.
• Work 10–30% each week across multiple departments on college-related tasks (e.g., equipment setup).
• Procure components and materials needed for fabrication, assembly, and/or repair of laboratory systems.
• Manage an inventory of spare parts and enforce practices of general laboratory organization and cleanliness.

Requirements

• Associate’s, technical, vocational, or related degree and/or certificate from an accredited institution of higher education, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
• Current, valid, and unrestricted driver’s license.
• Extensive knowledge of appropriate safety standards.
• Knowledge of basic programming and equipment related to assigned area.
• Knowledge of engineering materials and proper specifications for components.
• Operational knowledge of SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
• Proficiency in or the ability to learn basic physics (forces, load transfers, vibrations, energy transfer).
• Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management, and presentation skills.
• Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the department (e.g., Microsoft Office suite, CAD/CAM software).
• Strong attention to detail and follow-up skills.
• Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time, meeting assigned deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certificate in welding, CNC Machining, tool and die, or other professional certification in manufacturing processes from an accredited institution.
• Previous experience in fabrication with manual and CNC machining, producing high-quality objects, welding, laser/plasma/waterjet cutters, press brake/metal forming equipment.
• Previous related industrial experience or experience working with customers and/or in higher education.
• Two years of related work experience.
• Advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field.
• Certificate in an engineering technology field related to the assigned discipline.
• Knowledge of G-code and various CNC/manual machining equipment.
