About the role
As an Engineering & Technology Intern at Aegis Power Systems in Murphy, NC, you will work on real hardware — defense‑ and aerospace‑grade power conversion products — under 1:1 mentorship from engineers who want to teach. You won’t be shadowing; you’ll be building, taking a product from schematic to shipped unit and seeing your contributions on the production floor.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to mechanical design: create detailed 3D models, produce production‑ready 2D drawings, design chassis, housings, heatsinks, brackets, covers, and mechanical interfaces.
- Perform electrical engineering tasks: run power‑supply circuit analysis, simulate designs in LTspice/PSpice/MATLAB, evaluate components, and compare calculated, simulated, and measured results on the bench.
- Develop and debug embedded firmware for microcontroller‑based products, support hardware/firmware integration, write test scripts, and troubleshoot communication interfaces (UART, SPI, I²C, CAN).
- Build automated test sequences in LabVIEW that control power supplies, electronic loads, multimeters, and oscilloscopes, and support design verification (regulation, efficiency, ripple, transient response).
- Participate in fit, form, function, thermal, and manufacturability reviews, and convert legacy drawings to the current CAD platform while preserving design intent.
Requirements
- Enrolled in a two‑year, four‑year, graduate, or technical degree program related to the chosen track.
- Genuinely curious about engineering, manufacturing, defense, or aerospace.
- Work through problems instead of guessing at them.
- Catch details others skip past.
- Ask questions when stuck and accept feedback without defensiveness.
- Show up on time, ready to work, and keep your area safe and organized.
- Must qualify as a U.S. Person under applicable U.S. export control regulations (no visa sponsorship available).
Qualifications
- Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
- Class projects, robotics, coding projects, design teams, car/motorcycle work, repair jobs, or garage‑built projects all count as relevant experience.
- Common majors: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems; related fields are welcome if you feel you fit.
Skills
- SolidWorks, GD&T, sheet metal and machined part design, thermal management.
- LTspice, PSpice, MATLAB/Simulink, oscilloscopes, power‑electronics fundamentals.
- C, C++, Python, microcontrollers, Git, bench instrumentation.
- LabVIEW, NI‑VISA, GPIB/USB/LAN instrument control, TestStand, SCPI.
Benefits
- Four‑day work week (Monday–Thursday, 10 hours/day) → three‑day weekends every week.
- Opportunity to spend Fridays hiking, kayaking, swimming, or relaxing in the Smoky Mountains near Murphy, NC.
- Hands‑on experience with real hardware, production floor, and industry‑standard tools.
- 1:1 mentorship from engineers who want to teach.
- Own a project from start to finish and present it to the Aegis team at the end of your term.
- Gain professional references from engineers who observed your work.
Schedule
Monday through Thursday, 10 hours per day; every weekend is a three‑day weekend.
