About the role
Each summer, American Electric Power welcomes college students to a 10-to-12-week paid internship program. You’ll learn from industry leaders, collaborate with dynamic teams, and work on individual projects that showcase your talents. Comprehensive training and mentorship are provided to support your growth in the electric utility industry.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with project teams and experienced engineers on planning, designing, and executing enterprise resource projects to ensure seamless integration from design to construction.
- Participate in design reviews, training sessions, knowledge-building projects, and constructability assessments to maintain safety and operational standards.
- Conduct field visits to operational facilities to understand power system operations and assist in inspections and tests.
- Assist in the development and analyses of databases, reports, cost estimates, and dashboards to enhance data-driven decision-making.
- Support documentation for decision-making processes and initiatives aimed at improving operational performance and safety.
- Embrace AEP’s safety culture by understanding safety guidelines and standards in both office and field environments.
- Expand engineering skills by taking on new challenges.
Basic qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical, civil, mechanical, or chemical engineering in a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
- Must have completed at least your freshman year.
- Graduation date of December 2027 or later.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- This position is not eligible for sponsorship, OPT, or CPT.
- Willingness and ability to relocate for the summer to one of the engineering internship locations, if necessary.
Preferred qualifications
- Minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Interest in the electric utility sector, energy efficiency, and sustainability practices.
- Effective time management skills.
Location
Onsite in the Corpus Christi, Texas area, including nearby locations such as Port Aransas and Padre Island.

Pay
- Intern Student Engineer pay is commensurate with education hours.
- Minimum: $25.00/hr.
- Mid-point: $30.00/hr.
