About the role

Waukesha County's Department of Public Works - Engineering Division is seeking 2 hard-working Engineering students to aid the Engineering Staff in the design, construction, and operation of Waukesha County's Highway System during the summer months. This internship provides exposure to many different aspects of Civil Engineering, offering broad experience and insight into the profession to help guide future educational and professional decision-making.

Waukesha County’s intern experience is unique due to its practical approach to applying civil engineering knowledge in the public sector to deliver quality infrastructure and services. Interns are empowered to take on responsibility, building experience, confidence, and accountability. In addition to technical growth, you will work in a team environment and have opportunities to exercise leadership by training and guiding student peers.

The 2027 summer will be exciting and challenging, with multiple highway and bridge construction projects planned, including:

• CTH SS Culvert Liner Project
• CTH F/CTH K Intersection Safety Project
• CTH FT/CTH J Intersection Safety Project
• CTH O, Moorland Road Reconstruction
• CTH I, Mukwonago River Bridge Rehabilitation
• Countywide Traffic Signal Controller Replacements
• Countywide Asphalt Paving Program (CTH L, CTH Y, CTH OO, CTH I, CTH DR)
• Countywide Asphalt Route and Seal
• Countywide Reshouldering

Responsibilities

The Intern's tasks are diverse, depending on current projects. On any given day you could be working on the following types of activities:

• Roadway Design
• CAD Drafting/Civil 3D
• Roadway Plan Production
• Construction Estimating
• Design Field Surveying and Staking
• Topographic and Boundary Surveys
• Appraisal and Construction Staking
• Traffic Analysis and Reports
• Traffic Data Collection
• Construction Inspection and Record Keeping
• Bridge Construction Inspection and Record Keeping
• Asphalt Paving Program Construction Administration and Inspection
• Bridge and Culvert Inspections and Inventory
• Highway and Park System Asset Management Inventory
• Working with the Public and Waukesha County Customers
• Other tasks as assigned by the Engineering Staff

Requirements

• Current enrollment in a 4-year Engineering Bachelor's Degree program or a 2-year Engineering Technician Associate Degree program.
• Proven oral and written communication skills.
• Accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Ability to expand and improve problem-solving skills.
• Competent in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
• Reliable and dependable.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other staff.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with, or knowledge of, design and visualization software such as AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS and robotic surveying equipment.
• Possession of a valid driver's license.
