Engineering Group Manager - High Voltage Battery Systems Controls
About the role
The Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) – Battery Systems Controls (BSC) organization is responsible for the end-to-end development of High Voltage Battery Systems Controls and Software for all GM electric and (plug-in) hybrid electric vehicles (EVs and (P)HEVs). Our scope includes systems requirements, controls, diagnostics, software, and calibration development, as well as validation and deployment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and empower high-performing, self-organizing teams to deliver High Voltage Battery Systems Controls and Software solutions with excellence in quality, timing, and execution.
- Drive strategy development and execution within an agile framework to support business and product objectives.
- Lead Battery Management System (BMS) energy management software development, validation, automation, integration, and deployment activities.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, technical innovation, and operational excellence.
- Mentor, coach, and develop engineers and technical leaders, supporting both professional growth and career advancement.
- Build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships across engineering, program management, validation, and vehicle development organizations.
- Establish, manage, and monitor budgets for assigned responsibilities.
- Develop and execute workforce and resource planning strategies to support business priorities.

Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, including Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or related fields.
- 7+ years of experience in embedded controls, software development, calibration, systems engineering, related hardware development, and/or safety-critical systems.
- Strong understanding of software development processes and the ability to effectively navigate development lifecycles to achieve program deliverables.
- Familiarity with AI technologies, tools, and applications.
- Proven leadership capability with high integrity, strong initiative, accountability, and a growth mindset.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in ambiguous environments while driving timely, data-driven decisions.
- Strong customer-focused problem-solving and innovative thinking capabilities.
- Prior experience in electrification, battery management systems, energy management, or EV propulsion controls.
- Experience developing and deploying scalable AI-enabled solutions for electrification products, particularly within Battery Systems Controls.
- Excellent communication, organizational, stakeholder management, and leadership skills with the ability to align diverse teams toward common objectives.
- Understanding of Agile development methodologies, including the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, including Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or related fields.
- 7+ years of experience in embedded controls, software development, calibration, systems engineering, related hardware development, and/or safety-critical systems.
- Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration (MBA), or a related advanced technical field.
- 10+ years of experience in embedded controls, software development, calibration, systems engineering, related hardware development, and/or safety-critical systems.
- Engineering and people leadership experience managing teams responsible for embedded controls, software, calibration, hardware, testing, and/or safety-critical systems development.
- Experience developing and deploying scalable AI-enabled solutions for electrification products, particularly within Battery Systems Controls.
- Demonstrated success delivering results through collaboration, driving multiple technical initiatives simultaneously, and utilizing metrics and data-driven decision-making.
- Prior experience in electrification, battery management systems, energy management, or EV propulsion controls.
- Experience leading globally distributed engineering teams.
- Working knowledge of embedded controls development tools and ecosystems, including Jira/Jira Cloud, Git-based development environments, INCA, and related engineering toolchains.
- Experience leveraging data analytics and AI-driven methodologies to improve engineering productivity, quality, and decision-making.

Benefits
Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
Pay
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
Schedule
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
