ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST

About the role

Under the direction of a Senior Environmental Scientist, the Stormwater Coordinator participates in the planning and design of projects and other activities to satisfy requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) statewide permit for transportation facilities. The incumbent reviews all projects for compliance with current environmental laws and regulations and ensures the conditions of the Caltrans Statewide NPDES permit, Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP), and the District Work Plan (DWP) are implemented properly. Projects may be located anywhere in District 5; occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Review projects for compliance with federal, state, and local water-quality regulations.
• Implement the Caltrans Statewide NPDES permit, Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP), and District Work Plan (DWP).
• Apply knowledge of transportation design and construction terminology, methods, typical cross sections, hydrology, hydraulics, surveying, maintenance, and construction work.
• Utilize the Project Planning and Design Guide, Water Quality Planning Tool, and Stormwater Best Management Practices.
• Prepare or review Water Quality Assessment technical reports for environmental documents.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
• Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required; resumes and cover letters will not substitute for the SOQ.
• Unofficial or official transcripts/diploma must be provided if basing eligibility on education; foreign transcripts must include a U.S. equivalency report.
• Eligibility for hire may be determined by score on the Engineering Geologist exam; new-to-state candidates must be on the state examination list.

Qualifications

The SOQ must summarize your education and experience in the following areas (typed, 12-point Arial font, no more than two pages):

• Experience with Federal, State, and Local Regulations of Water Quality Standards.
• Experience working with the requirements of the California State Water Resources Board or Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB).
• Experience in transportation design and construction terminology, methods, hydrology, hydraulics, surveying, maintenance, and construction work.
• Knowledge of the Project Planning and Design Guide, Water Quality Planning Tool, and Stormwater Best Management Practices.
• Statewide NPDES and SW construction general permit knowledge.
• Experience preparing or reviewing Water Quality Assessment technical reports for environmental documents.

Pay

• Engineering Geologist A: $6,488.00 – $7,735.00 per month
• Engineering Geologist B: $7,428.00 – $9,296.00 per month
• Engineering Geologist C: $9,142.00 – $11,449.00 per month
• Engineering Geologist D: $9,754.00 – $12,215.00 per month

New-to-state candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of the alternate range when applicable.
