ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR.

About the role

Operates heavy equipment including mobile cranes, truck/trailer combinations, dump trucks, wheel loaders, skid steers, agricultural tractors, excavators, and dozers. Operates mobile and/or crawler cranes up to 50 ton with attachments. Guards against overturning equipment when working on edges of embankments. Operation requires coordination of controls governing motive power of equipment plus controls operating attachments.

Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing the full range of systems on the vehicles or equipment. Performs welding, both acetylene and electric, as needed in the repair of vehicles, trailers, tractors, hitches, and various other items of equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance of project areas. Operates and navigates support boats and towboats (65 feet and under) on the Missouri River.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as mobile cranes, dump trucks, wheel loaders, skid steers, excavators, and dozers.
• Operate mobile and/or crawler cranes up to 50 tons with attachments, ensuring safety near embankments.
• Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment systems.
• Conduct welding (acetylene and electric) for repairs on vehicles, trailers, tractors, and other equipment.
• Operate and navigate support boats and towboats (65 feet and under) on the Missouri River.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License.
• Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 24 months of appointment and thereafter.
• Drive Government vehicles as required.
• Obtain and maintain a USACE boat operator’s license (under 26') and authorization to operate a tow boat with barge on a reservoir within 24 months of employment.
• Obtain and maintain a USACE Mobile Crane Operators Certification within 24 months of employment.
• This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program.
• Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing required.
• Pre-employment physical required.
• Participation in the Medical Surveillance Program (annual physical) required.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element)

Ability to perform the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision.

Grade Levels

• WG-08: Ability to perform common engineering equipment operations (e.g., backhoes, front-end loaders, tractors) for rough grading, tilling, moving/loading materials, and clearing snow on flat terrain. Work is performed under normal supervision.
• WG-10: Ability to perform some engineering equipment operations (e.g., dozers, graders, excavators) for fine grading, sloping, and excavating on flat or rolling terrain with relatively constant soil conditions. Work is performed under normal supervision.
• WG-11: Ability to perform most engineering equipment operations (e.g., dozers, motor graders, excavators, mobile cranes) for fine grading, exact sloping, and deep excavations on steep, hilly, or rough terrain. Work is performed under general supervision.

Physical Effort

Heavy physical effort is required, including reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate equipment controls. Operators experience considerable strain from equipment vibration and jolting on rough surfaces, often working in awkward or strained positions. At the WG-10 level, the work is more strenuous due to larger equipment and adverse conditions. At the WG-11 level, operators must frequently adjust attachments, increasing physical demand and risk of equipment overturning.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in all weather conditions, often in open driver’s seats or platforms on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. Operators are exposed to risks of equipment overturning, noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and motor exhaust fumes. At the WG-10 level, exposure to injury and equipment hazards increases. At the WG-11 level, operators face heightened risks due to frequent attachment adjustments and challenging terrain.

Pay

Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement. The position may be filled at WG-08, WG-10, or WG-11 levels, with noncompetitive promotion potential to WG-10 and full performance grade of WG-11. The following incentives may be authorized: Relocation Incentive, Recruitment Incentive, and/or Advanced In-Hire.

Schedule

This position is not eligible for telework. Work may require outdoor duties in all weather conditions and may include irregular hours or shifts.
