Engineering Equipment Operator.

About the role

Operates one or more types of heavy equipment with multiple hand and foot controls, such as a backhoe, to dig, push, pull, pile, and load earth. Uses equipment fitted with a front-end loader to maneuver to a specific spot to transfer material from the ground into a dump truck. The equipment is used to dig multiple graves and prepare grave sites for first and subsequent interments. Landscapes grave sites by clearing brush, tree stumps, and rocks and cleaning underdeveloped land. Adjusts attachments for proper level, angle, and depth, according to the work to be done and the type of equipment used. Work is generally done on flat or rolling terrain, at new or previously landscaped grave sites with simple terrain problems.

Responsibilities

• Operate graders, tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
• Dig, push, pull, pile, and load earth; transfer material from the ground into a dump truck.
• Dig multiple graves and prepare grave sites for first and subsequent interments.
• Clear brush, tree stumps, and rocks; clean underdeveloped land.
• Adjust attachments for proper level, angle, and depth.
• Perform landscaping tasks at grave sites.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Pass a pre-employment medical examination.
• Must possess a valid REAL ID compliant state driver’s license.
• Subject to a background/security investigation.
• Designated and/or random drug testing may be required.
• Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• May be required to serve a probationary period.
• Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.

Qualifications

• Evidence of training or experience operating heavy equipment such as graders, tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
• Ability to do the job without more than normal supervision.
• Physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate equipment and attachments.
• Ability to lift weights up to 50 lbs; occasionally lift items weighing more than 50 lbs with assistance.

Physical Requirements

• Heavy physical effort with reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate equipment and attachments.
• Considerable strain from vibration, jerking, and jolting of equipment over rough surfaces and operating controls in awkward positions.
• Frequent heavy effort when performing duties such as tamping, carrying caskets/urns, lifting/moving grave planks, setting headstones.
• Ability to walk on hilly, flat, or rolling terrain.
• Exposure to noise levels exceeding 85 dBA for up to eight hours per day, which may adversely affect hearing.

Working Conditions

• Work performed outdoors in all types of weather throughout the year.
• Exposure to sun, noise, extreme heat and humidity, cold, snow, rain, wind, dirt, dust, fumes (from motor and exhaust), mud, and water.
• Work in areas where pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers are applied.
• Exposure to injury from mishaps involved in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment.

Schedule

• Work schedule may include Monday through Friday with occasional weekends.
• The cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time.
• When a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday.
• All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year.
• Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery.
• Occasionally called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.
