Overview
Position Summary
Perform complex technical office and field work supporting the design, layout, and maintenance of overhead and underground electric and gas distribution systems. This role is responsible for developing engineering designs, coordinating projects with internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring accurate documentation to support safe and reliable energy service.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop overhead and underground electric and gas distribution systems to support safe, reliable service.
- Prepare engineering drawings, layouts, and construction plans using Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) software and related tools.
- Perform system calculations (e.g., pipe/cable sizing, pressures, voltages) to support construction and maintenance activities.
- Develop cost estimates, bills of materials, and project documentation, including permits and easements.
- Cook up projects with internal teams, contractors, utilities, and public agencies to ensure alignment and resolve design conflicts.
- Conduct field visits to verify site conditions, locate existing facilities, and support proper installation of infrastructure.
- Utilize surveying equipment to assist with field layout and construction activities.
- Review and interpret maps, system records, and engineering drawings to support accurate system design and planning.
- Maintain and update system documentation and records following project completion.
- Monitor and communicate project progress, risks, and issues to appropriate stakeholders.
- Support and mentor less experienced team members while contributing to a collaborative work environment.
- Follow all safety standards and maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
- Associate degree in drafting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 12 months of experience as an Engineering Technician Trainee or equivalent, including successful completion of required training and testing programs.
- Must be qualified for entry into the classification through the company’s Employee Performance Review Program and meet all required training and certification standards.
- Technical Qualifications
- Proficiency in computer applications, including the ability to learn new systems; experience with Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) software required.
- Strong knowledge of gas and electric distribution systems, including symbols, terminology, materials, and construction practices.
- Working knowledge of the construction and maintenance of gas and electric distribution and transmission systems.
- Familiarity with surveying concepts and equipment (e.g., transit, level, stadia rod).
- Ability to read, interpret, and produce engineering drawings, sketches, and related documentation.
- Understanding of service areas, system layout, mapping, easements, permits, and related records.
- Ability to identify infrastructure components in the field and interpret system conditions accurately.
- General Qualifications

- Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Valid state driver’s license and ability to meet company driving requirements, including operation of manual transmission vehicles.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the role, including working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Flexibility to report to multiple work locations and shifts as required.
