About the Role

This recruitment will fill two positions that support the Department’s statewide transportation asset management efforts by collecting, analyzing, managing, and reporting data for Alaska’s transportation infrastructure assets, including pavement, bridges, culverts, signs, guardrails, lighting, traffic signals, intelligent transportation systems, and other roadway and airport infrastructure hardware.

The positions support asset inventories, condition assessments, performance measures, federal reporting, and long-range strategies that improve the performance, resiliency, and investment planning of Alaska’s transportation system. The incumbents will help evaluate asset conditions, identify preservation and rehabilitation needs, support lifecycle planning, and develop data-driven recommendations that inform project selection, investment strategies, and long-term system performance.

These positions will also help advance the Department’s use of modern data collection methods, including sensor-based systems, mobile data collection, imagery, geospatial tools, automated workflows, and emerging artificial intelligence applications to better understand asset conditions and support engineering decisions.

Responsibilities

• Collect, analyze, manage, and report data for Alaska’s transportation infrastructure assets.
• Support asset inventories, condition assessments, and performance measures.
• Assist with federal reporting and long-range strategies for transportation system improvement.
• Evaluate asset conditions and identify preservation and rehabilitation needs.
• Support lifecycle planning and develop data-driven recommendations for project selection and investment strategies.
• Advance modern data collection methods, including sensor-based systems, mobile data collection, imagery, geospatial tools, automated workflows, and AI applications.

Qualifications

Engineer Associate

• Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying, or architecture, including one year as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska or equivalent elsewhere.
• Substitution: ABET-accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying, or a closely related curriculum may substitute for non-specific experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).
• A bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution may substitute for four years of non-specific experience.

Engineering Assistant 3

• Bachelor’s degree with a major in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET-accredited institution and two years of engineering, architectural, or land surveying experience, including one year at the working or intermediate trainee level (e.g., Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or equivalent).
• Alternatively: A bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non-ABET-accredited institution and an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and two years of experience, including one year at the working or intermediate trainee level.
• Substitution: Four years of any combination of ABET-accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or relevant experience may substitute for the required degree. Graduate study may substitute for experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

Engineer/Architect 1

• Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
• If not registered in Alaska, must be registered in a state recognized by the Alaska Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors, eligible for comity, and must obtain Alaska registration within one year of hire.

Skills

• Data Management: Knowledge of principles, procedures, and tools for data modeling, backup, recovery, warehousing, mining, archiving, disposal, and standardization.
• Performance Management: Knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices for planning, monitoring, rating, and rewarding employee performance.
• General Engineering: Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, theories, and their practical applications.
• Project Management: Knowledge of principles, methods, and tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects, including cost monitoring and contractor performance.

Pay

Engineer Associate & Engineering Assistant 3 (OT Eligible)

• Juneau: $46.71/hour
• Fairbanks: $45.82/hour
• Anchorage: $44.49/hour

Engineer/Architect 1 (Non-OT Eligible)

• Juneau: $3,741.75 biweekly
• Fairbanks: $3,670.50 biweekly
• Anchorage: $3,563.25 biweekly
