About the Role

As an Engineer at Oncor, you’ll be part of our Transmission Relay and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Support group, providing in-house support to Transmission Operations, including P&C (Protection & Control) Engineering Specialists and System Protection personnel. This role involves establishing and maintaining Relay/SCADA protection philosophies, developing and reviewing procedures, supporting intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), providing training, and promoting safe and reliable operation of the electrical system. This position is based in Fort Worth, TX (777 Main St).

Responsibilities

• Provides in-house protection and control-related “service engineer” support for field personnel, including installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, and digital fault recorder (DFR) equipment, with field visits as necessary.
• Supports System Protection engineers in testing new relaying schemes and developing testing procedures prior to field deployment.
• Works closely with vendors, manufacturers, and company engineering groups to research, develop, and implement new technology, both hardware and software.
• Develops and/or reviews written standard protective relaying scheme procedures for work in power plant switchyards, major transmission stations, sensitive customer-serving substations, and other locations to support commissioning and maintenance testing (meeting NERC requirements).
• Tests and supports various software applications on P&C Engineering Specialist laptops as needed.
• Assists in the development of P&C Engineering Specialist training, held annually for all specialists and biannually for new hires, as well as on-demand training.
• Supports compliance with NERC PRC-002, PRC-004, and PRC-018 by providing technical support during investigations into relay events, including coordination with other departments.
• Assists in documenting and implementing Corrective Action Plans to address relay misoperations by compliance deadlines.
• Supports NERC CIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection) Cyber Security compliance, specifically for substation requirements, by providing technical input into internal procedure development, execution, and documentation.
• Performs all essential aspects and functions of the job as well as any other specific requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Engineer: 2+ years of relevant engineering experience.
• Staff Engineer: 4+ years of relevant engineering experience.
• Senior Engineer: 6+ years of relevant engineering experience.
• Experience supporting Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs) and PRC-002 standard is preferred.
• Ability to be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas is encouraged.
• Previous participation in committees and training of others is a plus.

Skills

• High level of knowledge in at least one area related to Power System Protection subject matter.
• Strong communication skills, including technical writing and oral communication.
• Demonstrated ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
• Ability to support IT in the installation and troubleshooting of P&C Engineering Specialist computer software.
• Flexibility, organizational skills, and multitasking ability to handle diverse types of work.
• Ability to effectively communicate complex subject matter and company issues to vendors and Oncor employees.
• Demonstrated history of technical decision-making and review of relay scheme procedures for corrective action prior to execution.

• Provides field support in a timely manner, including execution of P&C Engineering Specialist training sessions.
• Relaying procedures are written and/or reviewed accurately and timely.
• Maintains compliance with NERC PRC and CIP standards.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and execute the installation, testing, checkout, and troubleshooting of relay control schemes, including writing basic procedures.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
