Engineer, Test Development

Summary

The Engineer, Test Development designs, develops and implements automatic test equipment and test programs for product testing. The role may specialize in many areas but is generally categorized as functional (verification that a customer's product will perform its main purpose).

Responsibilities

• Work independently to develop technical solutions without assistance in a limited number of technical fields supporting common segments/technologies.
• Solve complex problems in cooperation with a team of other engineers.
• Attend and interact in technical customer meetings.
• Provide high‑level test hardware and software solution architecture.
• Review customer's product documentation and select appropriate equipment based on requirements.
• Support creation of a functional test strategy and test plan to meet project goals and requirements.
• Support creation of technical proposals with costed BOM and hours estimates.
• Research and comprehend relevant product technologies and associated skills.
• Develop production test strategies based on customer‑supplied specifications/Statement of Work.
• Design and develop test solutions—including hardware and software elements, initial builds, qualification, and installation—to meet product, quality, and test requirements outlined in the test plan.
• Debug tester issues using design of experiments, tools, and failure‑analysis methodologies.
• Execute all validation/qualification requirements by applying statistical and common industry methods.
• Stabilize test solutions for manufacturing, optimizing cycle time and yield with operations process teams.
• Collaborate with customers on product testability, test coverage, diagnosability, reparability, firmware/diagnostics, and user experience.
• Keep up to date with relevant industry knowledge and regulations.

Skills and Competencies

• Practical experience with test equipment, including but not limited to: Digital Volt Meters, RF Power Meters, Optical Power Meters, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzers.
• Software experience: LabVIEW, C#, Python, Linux.
• Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• MINITAB (or other statistical packages).
• SQL.
• Product knowledge: Wi‑Fi, Cellular Technology, Fiber Optic Communication, RF Cable Systems, Ethernet.

Physical Demands

The duties are performed in a normal office environment as well as on an operating production floor. The role may require extended periods of sitting, sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or detailed data, and repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, mouse use, calculator use). Occasional travel may be required.

Experience Requirements

1 to 3 years of related experience; experience in similar job roles.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Educational requirements may vary by geography.
