Engineer Internship
About the Role
This internship provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's engineering education. Successful candidates will be performing work in a Nuclear Facility at the Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory, which develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any engineering discipline. Engineering degrees in greatest demand include Electrical, Nuclear, Mechanical, and Fire Protection Engineering.
- Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent of full-time enrollment).
- Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible.
- Pass a new employment drug test. The Laboratory maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a Q clearance, except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation for access to classified matter.
Due to federal restrictions, citizens of the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong and Macau), the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the Russian Federation who are not Lawful Permanent Residents ("green card" holders) are prohibited from accessing facilities that support the mission of Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Essential Job Functions
- General physical mobility: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending.
- Specific physical mobility: use of both hands, arms, legs, and feet; carry/lift up to 20 pounds.
- Work environments: noisy environment, near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, near machinery with moving parts, potential for overtime or irregular schedules.
Work Location
The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
