About the role

This remote internship offers the opportunity to engage in comprehensive training for the design of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) systems in buildings. You will learn, through hands-on application, how to design a wide variety of projects while working as part of the Engineering Team and interacting closely with the Project Management Team to produce construction documents, assist in project specifications, and support the construction administration process.

Engineers in this role may choose to pursue a project management-focused career track, gain exposure across all three MEP disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing/Fire Protection), or progress toward deeper specialization in areas such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Power Systems Studies, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), or other mission-critical engineering specialties, based on individual interests, strengths, and business needs.

The Engineer Intern will work under immediate supervision, learning company policies and procedures to resolve routine issues while operating in line with organizational goals and values.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the production of engineering documents (50%):
    • Perform basic engineering work and design tasks under a senior engineer’s supervision
    • Perform standard computations and analysis
    • Learn to utilize AutoCAD and Revit software to prepare drawings and visual aids
    • Assist in the review of drawings details, schedules, sequence of operations, and drawing content as directed
  • Assist in pre-construction activities (15%):
    • Survey existing building conditions and prepare technical reports of findings
    • Collect data and other information for construction documents
    • Prepare project design and construction documents
  • Assist in construction activities (15%):
    • Work as part of the engineering team and interact closely with the project management team
    • Review shop drawings and submittals
    • Organize and prepare responses to RFIs
    • Assist with punch lists and project closeout documents
  • Reporting (10%):
    • Prepare project progress reports for internal and external stakeholders
    • Update and maintain shop drawing and RFI log
    • Manage personal hours using company tools
  • Technology, Digital Tools & AI-Enabled Efficiency (10%):
    • Leverage AI-enabled and digital tools to enhance efficiency, reduce manual effort, and support consistent, high-quality work output
    • Identify opportunities to improve processes and demonstrate a continuous learning mindset, seeking out new technologies, skills, and methods that elevate individual and team performance
    • Adapt to emerging technologies and evolving digital workflows, actively supporting the integration and adoption of innovative tools across the organization
  • Complete assigned tasks and deliverables on time and on budget
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

For those pursuing a Project Management track, additional responsibilities include:

  • Assist Project Managers with day-to-day coordination of routine project tasks and deliverables
  • Track action items, schedules, and milestones under guidance to support timely project execution
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation to ensure accuracy and accessibility
  • Support coordination between internal teams and external stakeholders by relaying information and following up on routine requests
  • Organize and assist in QA/QC and compilation of work products (including subconsultants) for external distribution

Requirements

  • Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management
  • Ability to complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to work successfully in a remote environment through effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness, and resourcefulness in a distraction-free workspace
  • Ability to follow company and site safety requirements
  • Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports, and correspondence
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form (technical and non-technical information)
  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or architectural engineering from an ABET-accredited institution in process, with a sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals

Training and Team Collaboration

In support of your success and long-term growth at DLB, the design team hosts a week-long, in-person onboarding and training program for new hires. This immersive experience, held at DLB’s training & collaboration space at BellWorks in Holmdel, New Jersey, is designed to help you build meaningful connections, gain hands-on exposure to our tools and standards, and develop a strong understanding of how your work contributes to our projects and teams. Attendance and active participation in this training are required as part of your onboarding with the design team. All reasonable travel expenses associated with attending this training will be covered by DLB.

Travel

  • Up to 10% travel, which may include travel to any or all 50 US states
  • One week of in-person training will be conducted at DLB’s Training & Collaboration Space at BellWorks in Holmdel, New Jersey
  • Effective May 7, 2025, a valid REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport) is required for travel associated with this position
  • Travel may involve transportation by car or plane depending on the destination and nature of the business need

Pay

$27.50 - $29.00 per hour
