About the role

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. This position will be physically located within a DCC and work closely with the existing Smart Grid Performance and Reporting and ADMS Support organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a high level of service to operating company personnel and other FE departments as required, continuous support, and proactive involvement to leadership and fellow peers surrounding DCC and smart grid subject matter.
  • Check performance of Smart Grid devices daily. Monitor, ensure, and report on the benefits of these technologies.
  • Support OMS/ADMS software performance and upgrades through User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
  • Maintain a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements.
  • Independently anticipate and meet technical needs.
  • Support ADMS model build process including power flow convergence verification and correction.
  • Support operator training with respect to distribution automation and volt/var optimization.
  • Continue to develop the new ADMS fault location analysis functionality by supporting the ADMS Support organization.
  • Investigate protection reach violations identified with in the new ADMS and work with regional engineering to correct any identified issues.
  • Perform complex engineering assignments involving operations of overhead and underground distribution and sub-transmission facilities.
  • Perform activities associated with the administration of the Manual of Operations, OMS, Distribution SCADA (DMS) and storm processes.
  • Collaborate with other engineering personnel on emerging smart grid projects.
  • Consistently anticipate and deliver results.
  • Provide advice, education, and encouragement to others.
  • Provide direction to system operators during major lockouts and outages for the best parallel restoration procedures.
  • Provide necessary data through the PI server, EMS and OMS to customer reps and management when requested.
  • Create, modify, and maintain all substation one-line drawings.
  • Monitor ADMS and dSCADA and initiate SOR’s or map corrections as needed.
  • Assist the set-up operators in complicated switching requests and evaluate loads, wire size etc., to determine if switching can be performed.
  • Discuss any switching incidences between set up operators and system operators to determine the best solution for the problem.
  • Issue various reports: DCC Monthly Scorecard Regulatory Reports Identify and enter Major, Minor, Commission storms into database.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: a Professional Engineer’s (PE) License a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited bachelor’s program. Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Minimum 3 years' engineering experience is required.
  • Strong commitment to Safety – must be committed to leading with safety and have a clear demonstrated understanding of our safety programs such as but not limited to the APH and S&HP Tools. Full competency and proficiency.
  • Strong element skills and knowledge of FE Distribution and/or Substation design.
  • Strong presentation skills to any level of management, and any size of audience.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Proficiency with data base query tools (i.e., Toad Data Point, SQL).
  • Experience with SAP, Cyme, and GISView a plus.
  • Background in Distribution and or Substation Engineering is preferred.
  • Demonstration of a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
  • Able to achieve active learning through a continued effort to develop breadth of knowledge, skills, and perspective.
  • Desire to continue to learn and grow, work across FirstEnergy, deliver results, and manage others.
  • Excellent technical analysis and technical writing abilities.
  • Able to develop effective working relationships with employees at all levels of FirstEnergy Corp.
  • Able to deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; Able to effectively present complex subject matter to all levels of understanding, including technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A valid driver’s license and have an owned or leased vehicle.
  • A willingness for travel to Company locations, as well as out of area locations if necessary.
  • Off-hours work should be expected to support storm restoration.

Competitive pay plus incentive compensation.
