Engineer II
About the role
We are seeking talented engineers to support critical naval engineering projects. This role includes 3D modeling, drafting, testing, and technical support to enhance the functionality and efficiency of Navy Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (AC&R) systems and equipment. Engineers will work closely with teams to provide innovative solutions for installation, testing, and maintenance of critical ship systems.
Responsibilities
- Technical authority for all Navy AC Plant, Modular Refrigeration Units (MRU) and legacy refrigeration systems and associated equipment and components to include surfaces ships, submarines, and aircraft carriers.
- Support design, modeling, analysis, and testing of all AC&R systems, subsystems, equipment, and components.
- Develop Ship Change Documents (SCD) and ShipAlts to input technical improvements to existing AC&R systems into the Fleet.
- Provide support for the life cycle of all AC&R equipment including design, installation, testing, logistics, technical refresh, and obsolescence.
- Support the Mission Readiness Panel requirements for testing at the Auxiliary Systems test facility.
- Perform equipment qualification testing (EQT) by developing, updating, and reviewing test procedures, witnessing tests, and reviewing test reports and waiver/deviation documentation.
- Execute Pressure tests and System Operational and Verification Tests (SOVT) tests shipboard.
- Provide engineering and technical support for ship modernization programs to include introducing new technologies and advanced control systems.
- Conduct Engineering surveys and drawing reviews to determine if system/equipment upgrades are required and feasible.
- Provide engineering in support of the obsolescence program to include design, testing, and evaluating components for proper form, fit, function, and operation.
- Review and analyze drawings to support material requirements and test plan/procedure development.
- Respond to and resolve Integrated Logistics System (ILS) technical feedbacks and technical manual deficiency reports through systems like Remedy and Navy 311.
- Identify technical issues and develop cost-effective solutions to improve system lifecycle management.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree in any mechanical or electrical engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: At least 3 years of professional engineering experience, with a focus on Navy AC&R systems (mechanical system design, repair, installation, modification, operation, maintenance, and testing).
- Strong understanding of Navy ship systems, including air conditioning, refrigeration, Fluid Systems, pumps, heat exchangers, actuators, and other associated equipment.
- Experience with control systems and variable speed (frequency) drives (VSD/VFD).
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in engineering and 3D modeling tools.
- Ability to support and execute technical testing and develop detailed reports.
- Team-oriented with strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- The ability to read and interpret ship installation drawings, installation specifications and NAVSEA Standard Items is a must.
- Must have or have the ability to obtain a SECRET clearance.
- Travel of up to 25% may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Exposure to open-air environments, including noisy, hot, and cold conditions.
- Required to visit project sites aboard ships and rigs, both onshore and offshore.
- Must wear various types of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hearing, eye, head, and hand protection, as required.
- Site visits may involve standing on a variety of surfaces and angles, bending, crouching, and climbing over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge or boat structural components.
- Exposure to sound levels exceeding 100 decibels.
- Requires prolonged periods of sedentary work, including sitting and/or standing.
- May be required to operate machinery, power tools, and/or heavy equipment exceeding 20lbs.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, to exchange and comprehend information, & speak English.
- Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including high heat and cold.
