The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) recognizes its Engineers are a highly valued resource and play a critical role in protecting public health and the environment. For that reason, we are now providing monetary recruitment incentives to new DNREC Engineers in accordance to our Recruitment Program Policy and Procedures.
This position supports regulatory, preparedness, and community protection programs and assists regulated facilities in meeting applicable requirements. Responsibilities include conducting onsite inspections, evaluating Risk Management Plans, reviewing technical and compliance documentation, preparing inspection reports, tracking corrective actions, maintaining program databases, and supporting enforcement activities. While current responsibilities include work under the Accidental Release Prevention program, the position is designed to provide adaptable capacity for emerging initiatives and future program needs.
Job Requirements
- Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher (or have an anticipated graduation date within 9 months) in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering or official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
- The State of Delaware recognizes the value of telework and flexible working schedules. This position is eligible for Telework and Alternative Work Schedules according to the State of Delaware’s Alternative Work Arrangement Policy.
Essential Functions
- Drafts, develops and modifies engineering designs, plans and specifications.
- Reviews permit applications, blueprints and/or designs prepared by others to ensure compliance with specifications and regulations.
- Applies the principles and theories of science and mathematics to research and develop solutions to technical problems.
- Plans and conducts field studies, surveys, research and development projects, inspections and/or investigations to collect data and ensure conformance to state/federal laws and regulations.
- Tests or evaluates materials, equipment, systems and facilities.
- Plans and coordinates engineering projects.
- Reviews, analyzes and reports on the status of projects and/or regulatory conformance.
- Develops cost estimates for project time and materials.
- Provides technical guidance and training to technical staff.
Salary and Benefits
Yearly: $64,250.79

Sign-on Bonuses: $4,000 for Engineer I, $5,000 for Engineer II, $6,000 for Engineer III, and $7,000 for Engineer IV. Installments paid after three and eighteen months of employment.
New employees must commit to two consecutive years of employment with DNREC in the Engineer I-IV series. Must be a new hire to the State of Delaware or new to the Engineer classification series within the State of Delaware.
