About the role

ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is searching for an Engineer I to assist with ship structure, stability, and load line reviews. This position supports U.S. government agencies (US Navy, US Military Sealift Command (MSC), US Coast Guard, MARAD, NOAA, etc.) by performing classification and certification services for surface vessels. The role requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to attain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed engineering review of ship structural plans and stability analyses for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
  • Prepare first-principle calculations or use computer-aided engineering tools to predict structural integrity.
  • Conduct classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis.
  • Use finite element modeling techniques, primarily FEMAP for model development and NASTRAN for finite element solutions.
  • Prepare technical reports and collaborate with other engineers to resolve problems.
  • Maintain the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of assigned projects to ABS standards.
  • Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements after undergoing training.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
  • 0 to 5 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software, including stability software such as GHS, NAPA, or equivalent.
  • Experience performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant Rules and Regulations.
  • Exposure to Finite Element Method (coursework or supervised research).
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Must be able to attain a security clearance.

Skills

  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to problems (complex problem-solving skills).
  • Strong command of the English language, with effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Familiarity with ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional or chartered engineer license.
