About the Role

Department 440 is the Payload Launch Control Systems Engineering group supporting SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, and COLUMBIA submarine programs. The department handles Systems, Hardware, and Test, collaborating closely with Software Engineering Department 454. The Systems Engineering team is responsible for developing and maintaining unique, one-of-a-kind submarines, performing diverse tasks throughout the project lifecycle.

This position is based in Groton/New London, CT, with part-time work-from-home availability depending on department needs. The team employs a System’s engineering V-model approach, utilizing Agile, Waterfall, or a hybrid methodology for product development and management.

Responsibilities

  • Customer-facing presentations
  • Requirements specification development
  • Design systems, including:
    • Cable assembly drawings
    • Connector and junction box selection
    • Development to Mil-specs
    • Understanding cross-discipline products (e.g., mechanical function)
    • Interface development for physical connections and data
  • Task leadership and management
  • Schedule and budget development and execution
  • Risk development and management
  • Review of other discipline’s products
  • Trade study and white paper research and authoring
  • Control system algorithm development
  • Concept of operation development
  • Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE)
  • Validation and Verification of Requirements
  • Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) interfacing and integration
  • Interface with NAVSEA, Naval Shipyards, government vendors, sub-contractors, and other stakeholders
  • Occasional travel within the continental United States
  • Development and maintenance of requirements, subsystem integration, validation testing, and fleet support for contractor- and government-furnished handling systems, vehicle systems, and electronic systems
  • System engineering efforts from initial design through hardware/software integration, component qualification, testing, platform support, delivery, and post-delivery support
  • Analysis and resolution of fleet-identified problems, assessment of obsolescence issues, and identification of components for technical refresh
  • Technology investigations, trade-studies, risk identification/resolution, cost-reduction opportunities, and validation of producible end products

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering
  • 0-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience
  • Current DOD Secret security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain one (U.S. citizenship required)

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • Experience in submarine electronics system development, integration, installation, and test
  • Demonstrated effective engineering project management, including budget, resources, and schedule management
  • Experience in network and clustered computing design
  • Understanding of design, build, sustain process, EVMS, and design tools/processes
  • Experience with Siemens NX, IBM Rational DOORS, IBM Rational Rhapsody, MBSE tools, and Microsoft Office tools (including Project)
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills
  • Experience working successfully both in a team environment and independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse audiences
