Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers, is seeking a lead electrical engineer for the FORD Class Valve Actuator Engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Design new actuator motors and controller circuit card assemblies.
- Perform electrical qualification of new actuators, including EMI testing, Electrical Power (MIL‑STD‑1399) testing, motor characterization testing, and operational testing.
- Support root‑cause analysis of technical issues with in‑service actuators.
- Manage obsolescence of in‑service and future actuators.
- Mentor and develop junior electrical engineers.
- Research, develop, design, and test electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks for commercial, industrial, and domestic applications.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program and 9 years of relevant exempt experience, or a Master’s degree with 7 years of relevant professional experience, or a Ph.D. with 4 years of experience.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Full‑time employment, 1st shift.
- Travel up to 10 % of the time.

Skills
- Familiarity with motor controllers and circuit card design (nice to have).
- Experience with induction and permanent‑magnet motors (nice to have).
- Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink (nice to have).

Pay
Salary range: $124,000.00 to $153,000.00 (estimated base pay; final compensation determined by experience, qualifications, and other job‑related factors).
