Description
Astemo Americas Inc. is seeking a highly motivated engineer to join the Suspension Core Engineering Team. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with a strong foundation in mechanical design, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing processes, who is eager to contribute to the development of next-generation shock absorber technologies and components.
Position Overview
The Core Engineering team is the technical backbone and component authority for shock absorber components and technologies, translating vehicle-level requirements into robust, manufacturable damper solutions by owning engineering fundamentals, design standards, and validation methodologies across global programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Contributes to the design and development of new shock absorber components and technologies, for passive and semi-active dampers.
- Applies fluid mechanics and hydraulics principles to support damper performance, flow behavior, and functional optimization.
- Supports component development from concept through prototype, validation, and production release following automotive project cycles.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings with detailed GD&T, in accordance with internal and global standards.
- Performs and documents engineering calculations, design trade-off studies, and technical justifications.
- Supports virtual validation and verification activities using simulation and CAE teams.
- Participates in design reviews with internal stakeholders and OEM customers.
- Collaborates with manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to ensure designs meet performance, cost, weight, and manufacturability requirements.
- Applies materials science, manufacturing process knowledge, and DFM/DFA principles throughout the design process.
- Supports prototype builds, testing activities, data acquisition, and post-processing analysis.
- Affords assistance with root cause analysis and corrective actions for development or production issues.
- Works closely with global engineering teams, Tier-2 suppliers, and OEM customers.
- Stays current with emerging suspension technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods.
- Manages assigned technical deliverables with guidance from senior engineers while demonstrating strong communication, teamwork, and continuous learning.
Required Qualifications
- Technical Skills:
- Solid fundamentals in: Mechanical design, Fluid mechanics and hydraulics, Materials and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and 2D drawing creation with GD&T. (SolidWorks or CATIA preferred).
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, DVP&R, and automotive development processes.
- Exposure to testing, validation, CAE or CFD is a plus.
- Exposure to vehicle dynamics and ride & handling fundamentals, including an understanding of how damper characteristics influence ride comfort, handling, and vehicle performance, is a plus.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to engage with global teams and support occasional travel.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Master’s degree is a plus.
- Experience:
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in automotive or mechanical product development (Strong internship, co-op, or thesis experience may be considered).
- Experience with suspension, dampers, hydraulics, or precision mechanical components is preferred.
Working Conditions
- Occasional meetings outside standard business hours to support global teams.
- Domestic and international travel may be required on a limited basis.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.
- Standard workweek with flexibility based on project needs.
