Engineer – Controls Engineering

Responsibilities

  • Configure IEC61850 IEDs via vendor‑specific tools and system configuration tools for complete system integration.
  • Generate Substation Configuration Description Language (SCL) files for system integration.
  • Apply interlocking principles used in substation automation systems and implement them on IEC61850 IEDs.
  • Design, configure, and test HVDC Control System hardware to deliver on time and within defined budgets.
  • Test and debug complex IEC61850 communication systems using industry‑standard tools such as IEDScout, Wireshark, etc.
  • Coordinate and interface the HVDC Control System with Balance of Plant equipment and SCADA systems, defining main I/O lists and analyzing signal interfaces for compatibility.
  • Collaborate with NPI teams to configure Remote Terminal Units (RTU), Bay Controllers (BCU), and Merging Units for signal acquisition in digital substation environments.
  • Design LAN networks/communication architectures and configure industrial Ethernet switches/routers and satellite clocks.
  • Follow departmental standard design practices, engineering reviews, and guidelines.
  • Define control panel requirements and produce detailed design documentation using standard design blocks, including panel electrical schematics (Engineering Base), wire/cable schedules, routine test specifications, general assembly drawings, and bill of materials.
  • Participate in testing and FAT witnessing of the control system.
  • Prepare and present technical information for substation control systems to internal and external customers.
  • Assist site activities related to installation and commissioning of the control system.
  • Share engineering information and promote open dialogue.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects consistent with engineering policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in configuring substation Bay Controllers, Merging Units, and IEC61850 IEDs.
  • Experience in control panel design, preferably for substation or power plant environments.
  • Strong background in Distributed Control Systems and Substation Automation.
  • Proficiency with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, e‑Base, and Microsoft Visio.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks such as Profibus and Ethernet‑based protocols.
  • Understanding of fibre‑optic cabling systems.
  • Understanding of LV cable sizing and distribution.
  • Experience with control and protection relay logic design techniques.
  • Experience developing electrical designs for industrial control systems.
