About the Role

Toyota’s Production Engineering (PE)-Battery Manufacturing Engineering (BME) Battery Cell Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Engineer (Battery Production Engineering) to join our Ryohin Joken (Conditions for Good Process and Product) advancement and problem-solving group. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role supports the PE-BME Battery Cell Department's mission to deliver engineering solutions for rapid competitiveness improvements through safety first, people development, and customer focus.

The primary responsibility is leading planning and problem-solving efforts in pre-production trial activity. This includes utilizing and improving systems and procedures for efficient issue identification, root cause analysis, resolution, and recurrence prevention/kaizen for subsequent projects. The role also contributes to developing the organization’s capabilities through the advancement and application of Ryohin Joken knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities

  • Member of a cross-functional team collaborating with equipment, material, product, and process teams to engage and resolve issues both internal and external.
  • Create and implement working/trial plans for confirmation of problem-solving activities.
  • Develop detailed technical and summary reports for organizational learning and development.
  • Provide input to process and equipment plans/specifications for kaizen and issue recurrence prevention.
  • Use and advance systems and procedures for problem-solving and learning capture.
  • Manage individual activities, status visualization/reporting, and incremental reflection.
  • Participate in internal and external partner relationships aligning to team objectives, development, and support.
  • Support department-level Hoshin for organizational advancement.
  • Contribute to standardization and kaizen (continuous improvement) of department systems and processes.
  • Drive individual development, seek feedback, and monitor progress.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering (Chemical Engineering or similar technical field) or 5+ years of equivalent professional engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in a manufacturing production preparation role and schedule/deliverable management, including stages of project plan, process/equipment plan, specification & procurement, installation, and trial (2 years required).
  • Experience in battery cell product, processes/equipment, and/or trial activities (1+ year required).
  • Experience in Ryohin Joken identification, application, and/or confirmation (Ryohin Joken means Conditions for Good Process and Product).
  • Experience coordinating with varied functions in large corporate organizations, including production engineering, manufacturing, research and development, or similar, and reporting to senior leadership.
  • Experience interpreting and applying product/process specifications, drawings, etc.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and shutdowns; overtime up to 25%; and travel (domestic and international) up to 15%.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the application of Toyota Production System (TPS).
  • Experience in product x process/equipment simultaneous engineering for new models.
  • Documented problem-solving certification or completed activity such as Toyota Business Practice (TBP), Fault Tree Analysis, or similar.
  • Experience in a manufacturing plant production operations role.
  • Experience with data analytics tools and methods.
  • Experience with digital engineering software tools and procedures, including the ability to read, interpret, and modify model data.
  • Japanese language proficiency, including verbal and written communication.
