About the role

Responsible to the assigned supervisor for performing complex engineering work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering knowledge in a safe, effective, efficient and economic accomplishment of assigned objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to understand and perform load flow analysis, Congestion analysis, short circuit and other planning studies as needs arise.
  • Familiarity with tools such as PSS/E, PROMOD, TARA and Aspen are a plus.
  • Partake in competitive transmission windows as well as partake in congestion analysis for generation acquisition.
  • Conduct area wide studies to assess necessary system improvements to address any reliability deficiencies.
  • Learn about other disciplines as well as the 4 RTO’s in which AEP operates.
  • Perform investigative efforts into problem areas and communicate findings to the wider team and management.
  • Follows policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external agencies.
  • Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees as needed.
  • Elevates issues to higher-level employees/leaders as appropriate.
  • Be heavily detail oriented and be a fastidious note taker.
  • Resolve and initiate solutions to routine problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin.
  • Identify problems that are beyond the normal routine.
  • Seek out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.
  • Communicate with teams of other disciplines and develop presentations to other teams/stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively and comfortably with peers and conduct clear and concise presentations.
  • Network with peers inside and outside the AEP system, identify key stakeholders, and use informal networks to get things done.
  • Resolve conflict, build consensus.
  • Makes decisions subject to review within established standards, policies and procedures.
  • Understands AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of their individual organizational unit.
  • Understands the budgeting and approval process.
  • Is proficient in the application and use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving.
  • Develops an understanding of utility regulation and financing.

Requirements

  • Note: This position is posted at multiple grade levels and offers a range of opportunities for advancement.
  • The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the Engineer Assc level with increased educational, skill, experience and certification requirements for higher level Engineers.
  • Engineer Assc(Grade 6): Salary Range- $84,000
  • This is an entry level position for new graduates with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.
  • Engineer(Grade 7): Has typically acquired a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET* along with two or more years of related engineering experience.
  • Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.
  • Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology can satisfy this degree requirement, if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
  • Engineer Sr (Grade 8): Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.
  • Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology can satisfy this degree requirement, if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Engineer Prin(Grade 9): Has typically acquired 8 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 6 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is preferred for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.
  • Individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology can satisfy this degree requirement, if they obtain a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
