Scope of Position

The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center (OSUMC) is committed to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients through teaching, research, and patient care. The activities of the Facilities Operations and Development Wexner Medical Center District support a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation. The Energy Engineer supports the Health System’s business units by assisting the planning, development, and operations for the health system’s energy infrastructure assets and design standards, including district provided utilities and distribution, steam, chilled water, natural gas, heating hot water, HVAC systems, sequence of operations, lighting controls, building automation systems, and other energy systems to ensure patient safety and achieve positive operational outcomes across all of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center facilities. Additionally, the Energy Engineer helps to identify and implement cost-effective conservation programs for Medical Center utilities, energy and HVAC systems.

Position Summary

The Energy Engineer (Specialist 2) supports the Wexner Medical Center’s 24/7 facilities operation by helping to optimize utility, energy, HVAC, and building automation performance across assigned facilities. The role assists in identifying energy conservation opportunities, collecting and trending utility and system data, and supporting the development and implementation of cost-effective energy efficiency improvements that reduce operating cost while maintaining patient and life safety. This position performs engineering support activities such as preliminary energy assessments, basic measurement and verification (M&V) of savings, documentation and reporting, and coordination with operations and project teams. The Energy Engineer (S2) works under general direction, escalating complex issues and recommending solutions to senior engineering staff, and may participate in construction/renovation reviews to integrate energy efficiency and sustainability measures where appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • 30% of time – Energy & Utility Data Monitoring and Analysis
    • Maintains utility consumption and basic budget variances; supports tracking and reporting of energy performance indicators.
    • Collects, trends, and analyzes building utility and BAS data to identify anomalies, conservation opportunities, and/or metering issues; escalates findings as needed.
    • Calculates, documents, and helps maintain energy and resource savings (e.g., water conservation initiatives) using established methods and templates.
    • Aids in preparing periodic energy reports and presentations for internal stakeholders.
  • 30% of time – Energy Conservation Project Support
    • Supports feasibility reviews and basic cost/benefit analyses for energy projects to justify cost-effective changes that improve efficiency and lower operational cost.
    • Aids in developing project scopes, compiling supporting documentation, and coordinating with internal teams and vendors for smaller energy initiatives.
    • Participates in project execution support activities (e.g., tracking action items, monitoring implementation progress, collecting pre-/post-data), and supports measurement and verification of outcomes.
    • Provides engineering quality support on construction/renovation projects by reviewing plans for energy-saving and sustainability opportunities and communicating recommendations to the project team.
  • 30% of time – Building Automation System and Control Support
    • Supports energy-effective scheduling and HVAC operational improvements by assisting with BAS trend reviews, setpoint/sequence evaluations, and recommending adjustments for review/approval.
    • Aids in developing or updating energy-related control logic and supports monitoring of BAS and ancillary energy control systems (e.g., lighting controllers) under guidance of senior staff.
    • Maintains building systems and equipment for opportunities to improve operational performance; collaborates with operations staff to coordinate troubleshooting and corrective actions.
  • 10% of time – Collaboration, Standards, and Compliance
    • Acts as an energy support liaison to operations staff by helping communicate energy initiatives and providing basic training/awareness materials as directed.
    • Supports sustainability documentation activities and helps assess and report current practices related to sustainability and energy management.
    • Aids in energy-related standards development and documentation (e.g., recommended equipment/controls practices).

Minimum Qualifications

  • For Hire:
    • Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering
    • 2 years of experience in one or more of the following: energy management, facilities/building systems, utilities, HVAC systems, building controls/BAS, or related engineering support.
  • Preferred:
    • Demonstrated ability to perform basic engineering analysis (trending, benchmarking, calculations) and produce clear documentation and reports.
    • Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Strong verbal/written communication skills and customer service mindset in a service-driven environment.
    • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, prioritize multiple activities, and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • On-going:
    • Mets mandatory safety and educational requirements.
    • Demonstrates competence in technical and interpersonal skills required to meet job expectations.
    • Takes appropriate action when needed.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of American Society of Mechanical Engineers Standards (ASME), American National Standards Institute(ANSI), Ohio Building Code (OBC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), The Joint Commission Resources (JCR), The Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) and other regulatory agency requirements for compliance.
