About the Department

The Emergency Department is a fast-paced, high-acuity unit providing high-quality adult emergency care. Denver Health Emergency Department is one of the nation’s leading Level I Trauma Centers, with one of the highest survival rates in the country for the most severe injuries. Our ED consists of 57 beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-4, accommodating critical patients. Additional support staff include emergency medical technicians (EMT), phlebotomists, EKG technicians, in-person interpreters, and social workers.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the RN in carrying out the plan of care for assigned patients. Acts appropriately in critical situations. (30%)
  • Obtains vital signs and differentiates normal from abnormal findings. Reports abnormal values or conditions to the RN (e.g., abnormal vital signs, bleeding, safety concerns, family issues). (20%)
  • Under direct supervision of the RN and as delegated by the physician, implements care based on prioritized patient needs, assists with the plan of care with measurable outcome and goals for the patient/family, and participates in the discharge planning process. (20%)
  • Assists with the care coordination and safe transportation of patients through the ED visit. Transports low-risk monitored patients through the hospital. (15%)
  • Performs transportation responsibilities when requested: transporting patients from one area to another; delivering laboratory specimens, blood products, medications, and other hospital/medical items to requested departments as needed; and using the pneumatic tube system to transport items, including blood products and medications. (15%)
  • Documents completed tasks, vital signs, procedures, and notes in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Documents patient safety observations in accordance with Denver Health’s policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) – AHA (American Heart Association) or American Red Cross
  • One of the following Colorado state certifications:
    • EMT – State of Colorado
    • IV Authorization certification approved by CDPHE (Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment)
    • AEMT-EMT Advanced – State of Colorado
    • EMTP-EMT Paramedic – State of Colorado

Skills

  • Knowledge of Emergency Department practices
  • Ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians, and the public
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Pay

$21.00 - $25.45 per hour

Schedule

Full-time (0.9 FTE), regular shift work
