Purpose
The EMT/PCA, under the direction of the RN, performs various patient care activities for assigned patients that fall within their scope of practice. In caring for a patient population which may include the newborn, toddler, adolescent, adult and the elderly, the EMT/PCA assists with data collection and performance of procedures that address each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age specific needs. The EMT/PCA collaborates with other members of the health care team to provide an organized and effective plan of care.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma preferred but not required. Ability to speak, read, and basic math skills required.
- Must have completed an approved curriculum for State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) training, and passed the Nurse Aide competency tests for written/oral and clinical skills; or completed the SRMC Patient Care Assistant training course; or completed a Medical Assistant curriculum; or completed the first semester of the physical assessment course in the Nursing Program. After hire, maintaining PCA competencies will be done through skills lab, observation, and written exams, etc.
- Must have or obtain certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (maintains currency of certification).
- Must possess a current license as an EMT from the Ohio State Board of Emergency Medical, Fire, and Transportation Services
- Can demonstrate knowledge regarding the care of the acutely ill patient via current experience with an Emergency Medical Transport Service
